<감담일기(坎窞日記)>에 나타난 김려의 여성 인식

국문 초록

본고는 김려의 유배일기인 <감담일기>에 등장하는 하층 여성과 그녀들을 바라보는 김려의 시선에 주목하여 그의 여성에 인식과 변화에 대해 살펴보았다. 김려는 독특한 문학세계로 인정받는 조선의 대표적 문인 가운데 한 명이다. 그의 시들은 대체적으로 조선시대 사실주의 문학이 이룬 중요한 성과로 인정받고 있는데, 그 이유는 유배체험을 통해 만난 많은 기층민들을 시에 등장시켜 그들의 삶의 현장을 매우 사실적으로 그려내고 있기 때문이다. 특히 그는 많은 하층 여성들을 애정 어린 시선으로 담아내고 있어 당대 다른 양반들에 비해 선진적인 여성관을 가지고 있다고 평가된다. 그런데 시가 아닌 유배일기 <감담일기>에도 그의 이런 여성관이 드러나고 있는지, 그렇지 않다면 과연 그 이유는 무엇인지가 본고가 관심을 갖는 측면이다. 결론적으로 말하자면 <감담일기>에는 그가 시에서 보여준 것과 같은 하층 여성에 대한 이해의 태도가 결여되어 있는 것으로 보인다. 일기에는 하층여성에 대한 기록이 총 5차례 있다. 남편이 죽자 재혼한 한 노파는 정부(情夫)의 칼에 찔리는 난리를 겪었고, 재혼에 재혼을 거듭한 금애라는 여인은 김명세라는 인간 말종을 자식으로 두었다고 하고, 얼굴이 예쁘고 교태기가 있는 소벽혜는 영리하고 사무에 밝은 군교 김진현과 남다른 관계를 맺고 있으며, 또 얼굴이 매우 어여쁜 기생 함월은 길주 목사 이현택의 총애를 받고서는 ‘등대고 세 부린다.’는 평판을 얻고 있다고 하였다. 이런 서술에는 수절하지 않은 하층 여성은 제대로 된 남편이 없는 것과 같으며 그녀들에게는 대개 망나니 같은 자식이 있거나 문제적 정부가 있으며, 얼굴이 예쁜 하층 여성들은 대개 힘 있는 사내들을 뒷배로 두고 있다는 생각이 깔려 있다. 이는 물론 김려만이 아니라 그 시대 양반 남성들의 매우 일반적인 생각이었다고 할 수 있다. 그런데 김려는 유배를 통해 기층민들과 가까이 지내면서 그들의 삶을 이해할 수 있는 기회와 시간을 얻게 되었다. 특히 하층 여성들의 삶의 비극성과 그러한 비극의 원인이 남성 중심의 신분사회인 조선에서 하층 여성으로 태어났기 때문이라는 사실을 정확히 인식하기에 이른다. 그러나 김려의 이런 여성 인식이 <감담일기>에는 아직 보이지 않는데 그 이유는 이 일기가 유배가 이제 막 시작될 즈음의 기록으로서, 그가 유배 체험을 통하여 하층 여성의 삶에 대한 이해를 얻기 전이기 때문이다. 김려가 하층 여성을 바라보는 관점과 그 이해의 정도에 있어, 유배 초기의 <감담일기>와 유배 체험 이후의 시작품들 사이에 차이가 있다는 사실은 매우 중요한다. 그가 하루아침에 하층 여성을 이해할 수 있는 눈을 갖게 된 것은 아니라는 점, 그러나 그런 이해의 눈을 가질 충분한 가능성이 있었다는 점을 <감담일기>는 보여주고 있는데, 이로써 한 작가의 작품세계는 일종의 박제된 완성품이 아니라 변화하고 성장하는 과정 그 자체임을 다시 한 번 확인할 수 있기 때문이다.

영문 초록

This study has focused on the low-class women described in , Kim Ryeo’s exile diary and his attention paid on them. Kim Ryeo was one of the representative writers with unique literary backgrounds recognized in Chosun. He, especially, left behind many literary works he had reflected his exile experience. His poetry gained a general reputation for literary achievements of realism in Chosun. That’s because he showed a number of commons he had met in exile in his poems and depicted their real lives very specifically. In particular, as he revealed plenty of low-class women such as a kisaeng, a butcher’s daughter and a fisherman’s wife with an affectionate gaze. he is considered a writer with a more advanced view of women than other noblemen in those days. On the other hand, another focus of this study is if his view of women is found in , his exile diary as well as in his poetry, and, if not, why he didn’t do so. In conclusion, has turned out to show his deficiency of an understanding attitude of the low-class women unlike his poetry. There are five series of records about the women in his diary. After a husband’s death, a remarried old woman was stabbed with her fancy man’s knife and a woman whose name was Kumae had got remarried several times and had Kim Myeongse, a naughty son. It was shown that So Byeokhe with a pretty face and a charming gesture had an extraordinary relationship with Kim Jinhyeon, a smart and well-performing officer and Hamweol, a kisaeng with a really attractive face, was a favorite with Lee Hyeontaek, a chief official in Kilju province, being so high-hatted under the shelter of her lover. In short, the low-class women who hadn’t maintained chastity were like the women with no decent husband and had a terrible son or a troublesome lover and the appealing low-class women usually got the powerful men’s support. This character portrayal has shown us so average a way of thinking of noblemen including Kim Ryeo in Chosun. However, he was given a chance and time to understand the commons’ lives in a close relation with them in his exile. Specially, he got to the correct recognition that the tragedy of the low-class women’s lives and its tragic cause were attributed to the fact that they were born in the patriarchal status system. The reason Kim Ryeo’s view of women in his poetry was not found in is that the diary was the records at the very start of exile. Important is this. Kim Ryeo was able to have a slight appreciation of the women’s tragic circumstances through his exile experience. But, even today after hundreds of years since then, how far have we escaped from the noblemen’s insufficient awareness of those women in Chosun? A lot of people have already pointed out the violent and problematic eyes on motherhood and chastity in our society. It is surprising that such way of thinking has not changed over hundreds of years.
