국문 초록

본고는 조선 중기의 선비 변사정(1529-1596)에 대해 고찰한 논문이다. 지리산은 예나 지금이나 모든 것을 품어주는 어머니 같은 산이다. 이 넉넉한 산속에 도탄이 터전을 마련한 것은 그의 나이 20대 중반 무렵이었다. 그는 출사를 달가워 않는 은일지사였지만 국난이 발발했을 때 의병을 일으켜 봉기하는 적극적 선비 정신의 소유자이기도 했다. 도탄의 인생은 은거와 참전의 변주곡이었다. 본고의 제2장에서는 年譜와 族譜 그리고 行狀 등의 자료를 바탕으로 변사정이라는 인물에 대해 소개하고, 그의 생애에 대해 살펴보았다. 2장의 구체적인 내용은 불우한 유년과 원대한 기상, 청년기의 학구열과 愼獨, 道를 통한 교유와 爲己之學, 義氣의 발현과 先見之明, 見危致命과 殺身成仁 등이다. 제3장에서는 문학 작품의 주요 특징을 개괄해 보았다. 3장의 구체적인 내용은 舊都에서 느끼는 인생무상, 不羈의 삶 속에서 安貧樂道, 주체적 시각과 활달한 기상 등이다. 제4장에서는 國恩에 대한 보답으로서의 의병 활동에 대해 살펴보았다. 4장의 구체적인 내용은 전황 파악과 용병술, 적극적 대책 강구, 決死의 각오 촉구 등이다. 제5장에서는 선비로서의 처신과 수양에 대해 살펴보았다. 5장의 구체적인 내용은 공명정대한 기상, 聖人의 도에 대한 존숭, 自彊不息의 군자적 면모 등이다. 본고에서는 문학, 의병, 선비라는 세 가지 키워드를 통해 변사정의 일생을 검토했다. 그는 시와 기행문을 남긴 문학인이었으며, 國恩에 보답하고자 했던 의병장이었고, 道學을 공부하며 聖人의 도를 흠모한 선비였다. 본 논문에서는 이 세 측면에 주목해서 도탄의 인생 전반을 파악해 보고자 했다.

영문 초록

In the paper, classical scholar, Byun Sajeong (1529-1596) of the middle Chosun is reviewed. Jiri Mountain is a mountain which is like a mother which embraces everything in the past and even nowadays. It was around in his mid twenties when Dotan set up a base in this splendid mountain. He was a secluded scholar who did not prefer entering government service, but he was a person with an active scholarly mind who knew how to rebel during national crisis. The life of Dotan was a variation of life in retirement and participation in war. In chapter 1 of the paper, the person called Byun Sajung was introduced and his life was reviewed based on data such as Yunbo, Jokbo, and Hangjang. The content of chapter 1 regards to his unhappy childhood and great spirit, enthusiasm for studying during his youth and Shindok (abstaining his body when alone), social intercourse through Tao and Wigijihak (studying for oneself), manifestation of chivalrous spirit and Sunkyunjimyung, Kyunwijimyung, and Salshinsungin, and etc. In chapter 2, the consciousness of the author reflected in the literary work was reviewed. The detailed content of chapter 2 regards to transitory life felt in Kudo (old capital), Anbinnakdo in the life of Bulgi (not being bound), revitalized spirit given by autonomous vision, and etc. In chapter 3, his activity in the army raised in the cause of justice as repayment for the favors bestowed by his country was reviewed. The detailed content of chapter 3 regards to figuring out accurate status of war situation, active deliberation of settlement, determination to risk death, and etc. In chapter 4, behavior and cultivation as scholar was reviewed. The detailed content of chapter 4 regards to fair and just spirit, respect for the Tao of supreme person, the aspect of true gentleman as Jagangbulsik (making effort without resting), and etc. In the paper, the life of Byun Sajeong was reviewed through three keywords of literature, army raised in the cause of justice, and scholar. He was a literary author who wrote poetry and travel essays, and an army chief who knew how to repay for the favor of his nation, and a scholar who studied Confucius ethics and who loved the Tao of supreme person. In the paper, it was intended to outline the general life of Dotan by focusing on the three aspects.
