국문 초록

개인의 성향이 외국어 불안감의 주된 요인이라는 기존 연구들과는 달리, 본 논문은 한미관계의 역사적 특수성에 대한 고찰을 통해 한국인들에게 광범위하게 나타나고 있는 영어 사용에 대한 지나친 불안감을 설명하고 있다. 한국의 운명이 미국의 손에 좌지우지되게 되는 수차례의 과정을 거치면서 두 나라 간에는 일종의 지배/피지배 또는 강자/약자의 관계가 형성되었고, 한국인들의 잠재의식 속에 미국은 일종의 두려움 또는 경외의 대상으로 고착화된 것으로 추정되며, 한국인들이 느끼는 지나친 영어 불안감은 이런 비정상적 관계에서 비롯된 것이라 판단된다. 한국인들은 자신을 원어민과 동일 선상에 놓는 심리적 무장이 필요하며, 이는 고차원적 사고체계의 계발 및 활용을 통해 가능하다고 사료된다. 심리적 무장 교육은 영어 내용 교육 못지않게 중요한 사안이므로 영어 수업 시간의 일부를 할애하여 정규 교육을 실시하는 것이 필요하다.

영문 초록

This paper attempts to explain Koreans’ excessive English language anxiety through the examination of the historical peculiarities of the Korea-US relations. As the fate of Korea has been controlled by the hands of the United States several times in the time lines of Korean history, the relationship between the two countries has become a kind of the dominant/the subordinate or the strong/the weak, and it is presumed that the US has become a kind of fear or an object of reverence in the subconscious of Koreans. It is assumed that Koreans’ excessive English language anxiety is attributed to this peculiar and unusual historical relationship. In order to escape from this abnormal situation, Koreans need to be psychologically armed in the first place, trying to put themselves in the same line with native speakers, which is believed to be possible through the development and application of a higher-order thinking system. The psychological armament education of Korean English learners is as important as the English content education, so it is necessary to devote a certain amount of class time to the psychological armament education.
