국문 초록

제 1차 세계대전이 끝난 후 1920년대 미국은 경제적인 면에서 정점에 올랐다. 물질적인 풍족함으로 사회는 점점 사치와 향락에 빠져들었으며 미국인들의 정신적인 면에 큰 변화를 가져왔다. 흔히들 이 시기를 ‘재즈 시대’라고 말한다. 이때 가치관의 혼란으로 방황하던 ‘잃어버린 세대’의 작가들이 등장한다. 피츠제럴드(1896-1940)는 ‘재즈 시대’를 대표하는 작가였으며, ‘잃어버린 세대’의 일원 이였다. 그의 걸작 『위대한 개츠비』는 ‘미국의 꿈’이 갖는 역설과 정념을 관련지어 당시의 시대상을 상징적으로 보여주고 있다. 그의 자전적인 소설에서 피츠제럴드는 작품을 통해 타락해 버린 물질주의 세계에서 이상을 추구하려다 파멸하는 개츠비의 일생을 다루면서 좁게는 개츠비의 개인적 이상과 사회 현실과의 갈등을 다루고 넓게는 미국 문명의 이상주의와 물질주의 사이에서 발생하는 갈등을 다루고 있다. 특히 피츠제럴드는 개츠비와 데이지를 통해서 이상주의와 물질주의 사이에서 비롯되는 반대감정병존을 보여주려고 노력했다. 이 소설은 1920년대 미국의 낭만적 환상에 대한 죽음을 기술하고 가속화된 불일치, 다시 말해서 현대사회의 물질적인 가치들 앞에서 남성과 여성의 상호적인 소외감 안에서 나타날 수 있는 주제를 구체화하였다.

영문 초록

During the 1920s when the First World War was ended, the cultural history of America had considerably crucial meanings. The American economy had reached its stride, and the spiritual aspects of Americans were changed greatly. Thus, we call those days as ‘the Jazz Age’. with the rapid economic progress and the material richness of America, Americans gradually enjoyed materialism and epicureanism without the traditional values. Then, the authors of ‘Lost Generation’ appeared to establish the correct values from the social confusion. Francis Scott Fitzgerald(1896-1940) who represents ‘the Jazz Age’ is a member of ‘Lost generation.’ From his masterpiece 『The Great Gatsby』, he symbolically shows the phases of the times in ‘American Dream’ concerning with irony and pathos. In his autobiographical novel, Fitzgerald wrote the nature of main characters. Gatsby, Daisy, Tom Buchanan, and Mrs. Wilson etc., Especially, Fitzgerald was intended to show the ambivalence between idealism and materialism with regard to Gatsby and Daisy. It was always the becoming they dreamed of, never the being. In this sense, the dream of Gatsby can be considered as Romantic vision that was effected from John Keats. of course, the setting and the thought of 『The Great Gatsby』 were influenced from John Keats. In order to show the confusion of characters, whiteness imagery, richness imagery, and desolation imagery are reflected properly. Therewith, this novel describes the death of a romantic vision of America in the 1920s and embodies that theme in the accelerated dissociation - the mutual alienation - of men and women before the materialistic values of modern society.
