국문 초록

조선후기 통신사가 남긴 기록에는 정치ㆍ경제ㆍ문학ㆍ과학기술ㆍ문 자ㆍ출판ㆍ산업 등에 이르기까지 다양한 일본정보와 지식이 실려 있다. 그리고 통신사행이 거듭될수록 정보의 탐색 영역은 확장되었으며, 축적된 정보는 방대해져 갔다. 이는 기록 주체의 학문적 성향이나 저술 목적 등에 따라 통신사행을 통한 일본 체험의 양상이나 지식을 수용하는 방식은 균일하지 않았기 때문이다. 특히 오랜 기간 일본과 빈번하게 교류 했던 역관들은 다른 사행원과는 다른 방식으로 일본지식을 탐색하고 기록하였다. 우선 역관은 조선과는 다른 용어를 조선에 맞춰 개념화하고 일본어음을 달아 일본 현지에서 사용되는 용어를 정확하게 쓰고자 하였 다. 또 중립적이고 객관적이 태도로 일본을 바라보고자 했으며, 이미 알려진 일본지식도 다시 확인하여 내용을 풍부하게 더했다. 그리하여 조선 후기 통신사 역관은 단순히 일본에 관한 단순 사실이나 일본 서적을 구해서 전달하는 역할에서 벗어나 통신사행록을 저술하여 일본지식을 생성하는 데까지 나아갔다.

영문 초록

The records left by Joseon missions to Japan in the latter period Joseon Dynasty include various Japanese information and knowledge ranging from politics, economy, literature, science and technology, text, publishing and industry. As the visits of Joseon missions to Japan continued, the search area of information expanded and the accumulated information became vast. This is because the way of experiencing Japan and accepting the knowledge of Japan through Joseon missions to Japan was not equal depending on the academic tendency or the writing purpose of recorders. In particular, the interpreters who had frequently interacted with Japan for a long time searched and recorded the knowledge about Japan in different ways from other duty entourage. First of all, the interpreters tried to conceptualize different Japanese terms from Joseon language in accordance with Joseon language and to use Japanese terms correctly by giving the reading of Japanese characters in Joseon language. They also wanted to look at Japan with a neutral and objective attitude, and double-checked already known information about Japanese and enrich the contents. So, the interpreters of late Joseon Dynasty did not just carry out their role of simply delivering facts about Japan or bringing Japanese books, but moved on to generate the knowledge about Japan by writing achievements records.
