국문 초록

이 글은 주요인물의 상봉 장면을 통해 <장경전>의 가정소설적 면모를 살핀 것이다. <장경전>은 영웅의 일대기에 따라 주인공이 시련을 극복하고 국난을 타개하므로 그간의 연구에서 주로 영웅소설로 분류되었다. 그러나 이 작품은 군담적 요소가 다른 영웅소설에 비해 약화되어 있고 오히려 가족과의 상봉 화소에 서사적 비중이 높게 나타난다. <장경전>의 전반부와 후반부는 부모 세대의 구몰을 기점으로 나눌 수 있는데 전반부에는 영웅담이, 후반부에는 쟁총담이 펼쳐진다. 그런데 이 두 부분이 긴밀성을 결여했다는 평가가 있기도 하다. 이러한 측면에 집중하여 이 작품의 가정소설적 특성을 살펴보았다. 첫째, <장경전>은 영웅의 일대기를 바탕으로 구성되었으나 이것은 등장인물의 상봉을 위한 계기로 작용하였다. 장경은 어린 시절 부모와 이별하고 온갖 고초를 겪는다. 그러다 초운을 만나 정서적 공동체를 구축하게 되지만 그녀와도 곧 헤어지게 된다. 장경은 문무에 탁월한 재능 덕분에 입신양명하여 결국 잃어버렸던 가족을 만날 요건을 충족한다. 영웅적 활약으로 가족의 상봉이 가능했는데, 여기에서 군담적 요소는 감소하고 가족과의 결합이 더욱 중요하게 나타났다. 즉 영웅의 일대기를 기본 구성으로 하되, 이러한 서사가 가족의 상봉을 위한 계기로 활용되었다고 볼 수 있다. 둘째, 가족 간의 상봉 장면을 자세하게 형상화하여 가족의 결합을 강조하였고 이를 통해 가정 공동체를 중요하게 생각하는 작가의식이 드러났다. 이 작품은 상봉 화소를 풍부 하게 표현하기 위해 상봉의 조력자와 신물을 적극적으로 활용하였다. 부친과의 상봉에서는 신담이, 모친과의 상봉에서는 향란이 매개인물로서 도움을 제공하는 역할을 담당하였다. 그리고 상봉에서 신물을 확인하는 장면을 부각하여 가족 간 유대감을 강조하기도 하였다. 초운과의 상봉에서는 신물을 교환하며 애정과 신의를 드러내어 장경의 주체적 판단에 따른 연애혼을 긍정하기도 하였다. 이처럼 다양한 서사적 장치를 배치함으로써 가족 간 상봉 장면에서 가족애의 실현이라는 주제의식이 선명하게 드러났다. 셋째, <장경전>은 가족의 결합 장면에 서사적 비중을 두면서 가정 내의 효를 강조하였고 애정에 바탕을 둔 부부 관계를 긍정하였으며 가족애의 소중함을 드러냈다. 장경은 부모와 상봉한 이후 가문과 부모를 위해 무조건적으로 헌신하면서 효의 가치를 수호하였다. 또한 초운과의 결합 의지를 적극적으로 표현하고 가정 내 쟁총 사건을 엄격하게 처리함으로써 부부 간의 애정과 가족 구성원의 화합을 중요하게 여겼다. 이러한 장경의 모습을 통해 가정의 화목을 최고의 가치로 생각했던 당대 서민층의 사고를 짐작할 수 있다.

영문 초록

Janggyeongjeon is often classified as a heroic novel. The hero’s chronicle illustrates a male protagonist who overcomes early struggles to pass the state examination and save the nation from doom. However, in relation to the conventional heroic novel archetype, Janggyeongjeon features less of the protagonist’s military triumphs and instead focuses the narrative around the hero’s reunion with his family after his heroic accomplishments. Furthermore, Janggyeongjeon has been noted for its weak link between the early and later chapters. This paper explores such elements of Janggyeongjeon to illuminate aspects of the family novel from its reoccurring scenes of family reunion, and uses this framework to conduct an in-depth analysis of its narrative structure. First, while Janggyeongjeon is based on the life of a hero, the heroic elements function to propel the reunion between the protagonist and his family. Janggyeong is separated from his parents due to early disturbances, and meets Chowoon who provides him great comfort but must ultimately part ways. Now alone, he uses his outstanding talents to rise to fame and prestige and even becomes an army general to save the nation from doom. Such accomplishments allow him to reunite with his family and form a complete home. In this process, the narrative highlights his reunion with his family members more so than his heroic actions that salvage the nation from crisis, demonstrating that the novel’s structure of chronicling a hero’s life is an instrument to facilitate family reunion. Secondly, the novel uses rich descriptions in the reunion scenes to heighten the family’s gathering, and emphasizes the importance of a domestic unit through such accounts. To effectively illustrate the union between family members, the novel actively utilizes keepsakes and aides who facilitate the reunion. When Janggyeong reunites with his father, the character of Shindam is set forth to deliver messages between the two and heighten narrative interest. The same method is used with Hyangran when Janggyeong reunites with his mother. Moreover, the novel presents scenes in which the characters confirm each other’s keepsakes to demonstrate the passing down of traditions and family bond. Janggyeong’s enthusiasm during his reunion with Chowoon signifies the importance of marriage based on love, and the confirmation of keepsakes they had traded earlier on emphasizes their love and trust towards each other. Such various devices construct a rich narrative of reunion, demonstrating that the author valued family love. Third, Janggyeongjeon’s narrative of family love emphasizes filial piety within the family, affirms marriage based on love, and reveals the significance of family love. After finally reuniting with his parents, Janggyeong guards the value of filial piety by putting all his efforts into supporting his parents and household despite current troubles and fulfilling his duty as their son. Moreover, he reunites with Chowoon to vow for devotion until death, and makes firm decisions to correct the wrongdoer in family disputes to cherish the couple’s love. Janggyeong’s such attitudes reveal that people of those times cherished filial piety and trust within the marriage as the first steps towards securing peace within the family and believed them to be foundations of a strong family relationship.
