울진 열녀설화의 구성방식과 전승의식

국문 초록

열녀비각이 있는 8명의 열녀에 대한 설화를 16편 채록하고, 이들 설화에 나타나는 양상을 토대로 하여 구성방식과 전승의식을 살폈다. 울진의 열녀설화는 절개 지키기와 남편 살리기 유형으로 크게 나누어진다. 부수적으로 복합 유형이 있으니, 남편 살리기가 실패하면서 절개 지키기가 이어진다. 절개 지키기는 남편의 부재를 전제로 하고, 절개를 지키는 방식으로는 수절과 자진이 있다. 남편 살리기는 남편의 得病이 전제가 되고, 남편 살리기가 성공을 거두는 결말을 가진다. 울진 열녀설화의 구성방식은 고정과 가변의 원리와 확장과 차용의 원리로 이루어진다. 고정과 가변은 본래부터 있던 요소의 일부를 답습하고 새로운 요소를 추가하는 경우이다. 고정 화소를 향해 구심력이 작용하고 기억의 불완전등과 같은 요인에 의해 그 반대 방향으로 원심력이 작용한다. 원심력이 작용해 나타나는 것이 가변적 화소이니, 원심력은 구심력과 팽팽한 길항관계를 가지면서 많은 가변적 화소의 생성으로 설화를 다채롭게 만드는 기능을 한다. 한편 확장과 차용을 통해 열녀설화들의 각편이 생산된다. 확장은 설화의 핵심 화소가 다른 시대의 사회적 요소와 접합되면서 일어나기 쉽고, 차용은 다른 설화나 서사에서 흔히 발견되는 화소를 차용하는 경우이다. 차용은 원심력의 작용이지만 구심력의 영향권 안에서 일어나고, 구심력과 원심력의 길항관계 속에서 일어난다. 열녀설화가 제재로 삼는 ‘열’은 본디 주체가 여성에 국한되지 않고 관념적이지도 않았으나, 중세에서 실현되면서 여성으로 한정되고 관념화되었다. 당사자인 여성은 열행을 추구하는 데 있어 고민과 갈등을 겪고 비장한 마음으로 실천했다. 울진의 열녀설화에 나타난 전승의식은, 이러한 열행의 어려움을 긍정하고 경험적으로 인식하는 의리의 발현으로 본다는 점이다. 열녀설화의 전승자들은 열행의 어려움을 인식하고서 그 비범성을 높이 평가한다. 또한 전승자들은 열행을 학습한 대로 따른 것이 아니라 정서적 토대와 의식적 판단을 거친 것으로 이해한다.

영문 초록

This study recorded 16 tales regarding 8 chaste women for whom there are chaste woman monument pavilions (monument pavilion of honor and encouragement) located in Uljin-gun and investigated the format and transmission-consciousness of those tales. It is pat of working on clarifying sprit of righteousness in Uljin. Chaste woman tales of Uljin can be divided into two major types such as chastity keeping and husband vivification. Subordinately, there is a complex type in which the failure of husband saving is eventually followed by chastity keeping. Chastity preservation stands on the assumption that there is the absence of husband, and the ways of chastity preservation comprises defending chastity and committing a suicide. Husband saving has a prerequisite condition that the husband takes a disease, and there is a conclusion that husband saving may succeed in the long run. The format of chaste woman tale of Uljin has principles of fixation and change, principles of expansion and borrowing. Fixation and change follow suitof elements as they were originally, and add new elements. The centripetal force functions twad the fixed motif and due to faultiness of memories, etc., the centrifugal force functions on the opposite way. As the vaiable motif that appears by functioning of centrifugal force, the centrifugal force has antagonistic relation with the centripetal force, functioning as transmitting tales in a colorful way. In the meantime, chaste woman tales produce alternative versions through expansion and borrowing. Expansion can easily occur when key motif of tale is connected with social elements of other era, and borrowing utilizes motif that is frequently found in other tales and narratives. Borrowing is a functioning of the centrifugal force but it occurs within the boundary of influence of the centripetal force. The material, yeol(烈) for chaste woman tales used to be authentic righteousness that human beings should posses other than limiting in women for the subject of practice, but entering the middle ages, taking into account sovereign character, it was limited in women and became normative. In this circumstance, the women, the parties concerned experienced agonies and conflicts, and practiced yeol(烈) with a tragic but brave mind. Transmitters of chaste woman tales affirm the difficulty in the practice of yeol(烈) and highly evaluate extraordinariness. Also, transmitters don’t follow the way chaste woman learned but recognize that they actually practiced yeol(烈) through emotional frameworks and conscious decisions.
