陶菴 李縡의 詩觀과 詩世界에 대한 일고찰 － 龍仁 隱居時期 詩作을 중심으로 －

국문 초록

이 글은 龍仁 隱居時期 陶菴 李縡의 詩觀과 詩世界에 관한 연구이다. 李 縡(1680~1746)는 18세기 老論界의 핵심인물이다. 당세에 道學의 巨擘으 로 손꼽혔던 인물로, 辛壬士禍로 인해 仲父 李晩成(1659~1722)이 죽음을 당한 뒤로는 주로 龍仁의 寒泉에 은거하며 의리를 내세워 관직에 나아가지 않고 평생 재야에서 道學에 전념하였다. 지금까지의 선행 연구에서 도암과 도암 시문학의 실체가 어느 정도 규명되었지만 도암의 漢詩와 관련하여 그의 詩認識이 어떠했는지, 어떤 詩를 典範으로 삼았는지, 또 실제 作詩에서 어떤 시를 지향하였는지는 상세히 논의되지 않았다. 이 점에 주목하여 이글에서는 도암 死後에 그의 門人이 남긴 陶菴語錄 을 중심으로 그의 詩文認識과 詩觀에 대해 살펴보고, 그가 도학자로의 삶을 영위하는데 중요한 전환점이 된 용인 은거시기의 삶과 그 시기의 詩作을 ‘道學的 思惟와 자아성 찰의 指向’, ‘物我의 交感과 寓意的 傳言’, ‘전원의 일상과 自適의 興趣’라는 세 영역으로 분류하여 살펴보았다. 그리고 이를 바탕으로 도암이 추구했던 詩觀과 용인 은거시기 詩世界의 상관관계를 규명해 보았다. 먼저 ‘道學的 思惟와 자아성찰의 指向’의 범주에 속하는 작품은 대부분 聲律과 辭致와 같은 외면적인 형식보다는 性情의 함양으로 인해 도암의 내면에 축적된 氣像과 절실한 의미가 발현된 시였다. 뿐만 아니라, 이는 도암의 추구했던 詩持向과 일치하는 부분이며, 큰 범주에서 보자면 詩文 자체에서 순수한 문학의 가치와 효용을 찾기보다는 詩文을 통해 작가 개인의 存心 養性은 물론 風敎를 목적으로 하는 儒家의 전통적 詩文觀과 일맥상통한다. 다음으로 ‘物我의 交感과 寓意的 傳言’의 범주에 속하는 작품에서는 편협하고 촉박한 시를 지양하고 忠厚한 詩經 의 시를 전범으로 삼았던 그의 詩觀과 맥이 닿아 있는 작품들이 많았다. 이는 도암이 詩經 의 시를 전범 으로 삼은데 기인한 것이지만 그에 더하여 용인 은거시기에 그가 이룩했던 심성수양과 학문적 성취가 그의 詩作 속에 녹아든 결과라 생각된다. 마지막으로 ‘전원의 일상과 自適의 興趣’에서 살펴보았던 작품들은 道學 的 思惟가 중심을 이루는 작품들과 달리 脫俗的인 취향과 소탈한 일상의 情懷가 주된 심상을 이루었는데, 이는 도암의 初期 詩作에 드러난 지향점과 그 맥이 닿아있었다. 용인 은거 시기 이후의 시세계에서 道學的 思惟와 性理學的 의식이 내재된 작품이 중심을 이루고 있지만, 그가 초년기에 염원 했던 은거가 더 이상 염원이 아니라 현실로 다가오면서 초년기 詩作에서 추구했던 탈속적이고 소탈한 분위기가 자연스레 은거시기의 詩作에 융화되어 도암의 시세계에 있어 또 다른 하나의 축을 형성한 것으로 보인다. 도암이 도학자이며 특히 도학에 침잠했던 용인 은거이후 그의 시세계에서 도학적 성향의 시가 많은 부분을 차지하는 것은 부정할 수 없는 사실이 다. 그러나 陶菴語錄 을 통해 본 도암은 자기만의 뚜렷한 詩觀을 견지하고 있었으며, 당시 詩壇의 폐해에 대한 비판과 반성을 통해 개성적인 시를 쓰려고 노력했던 인물임에 틀림이 없다. 이러한 사실로 볼 때 도학자로서의 면모 뿐 아니라, 文人으로서 도암에 대한 재평가가 이루어져야 할 것으로 보인다.

영문 초록

This article is a study on the poetry view and the poetry world of Doam Lee Jae(1680~1746) during his seclusion period in Yongin. Lee Jae is a core figure of the 18th century Noron faction. He was regarded as a leading scholar of the moral philosophy in the present age, and since his middle life, he had secluded in the Hancheon, Yongin and devoted himself to the moral philosophy out of office in his lifetime. In the previous studies so far, the realities of Doam and Doam s poetic literature have been clarified to a certain extent, but in relation to Doam s Chinese poetry, what his understanding on the poetry was like, what poem he made a classic and what poem he aimed at in his actual poem writing were not discussed in detail. Paying attention to this point, in this article, focusing on “Analects of Doam” which was left by his literary men after the death of Doam, I studied his understanding on the poetry and literature and his poetry view, and I classified and examined the life of the seclusion period in Yongin which became an important turning point in living his life as a moral philosopher and the poem writing at that time into three broad categories. And based on this, I tried to investigate the correlation between the poetry view Doam pursued and the poetry world during the seclusion period in Yongin. First of all, the works belonging to the category of “thinking in moral philosophy and the orientation towards self-reflection” were mostly the poems manifested of his spirit and earnest meanings accumulated in the inner side of Doam due to the cultivation of his nature rather than the form such as rhythm or style. This is a part that coincides with the poetry orientation that Doam pursued, and in the large category, it has something in common with the traditional view of poetry and literature of Confucianism aimed at the education of public morals as well as the author s personal protection of conscience and cultivation of nature rather than the pursuit of pure literary value and utility. Next, in the works belonging to the category of “the communion of the external objects and the self and allegorical message”, there were many works which were consistent with his view of poetry and literature that avoided narrow and tight poems and made the faithful and generous poems of the Book of Odes as a classic. This is caused by the fact that Doam made poems of the Book of Odes as a classic, but I think that in addition to this, the cultivation of nature and the academic achievement he accomplished during the seclusion period in Yongin were melted into his poem writing. Finally, in the works we saw in “the pastoral daily life and the pleasure of self-satisfaction”, the taste of unworldliness and the emotion of free and easy daily life consist of main images unlike the works which consist mainly of thinking in moral philosophy, and this was consistent with the orientation manifested in Doam s early poem writing. Although the works which connote the thinking in moral philosophy and consciousness of Neo-Confucianism consist mainly in the poetic world after the seclusion period in Yongin, it seems that while the seclusion he longed for in his early days appeared no more a wish, but a reality, unworldly, free and easy atmosphere he pursued in his early days was naturally harmonized with the poem writing of the seclusion period, and it formed another axis in the poetic world of Doam. It is a indisputable fact that Doam was a moral philosopher, and especially, the poems of moral philosophical tendency occupy much part in his poetic world since Yongin seclusion when he was immersed in moral philosophy. However, seen through “Analects of Doam”, it is true that Doam adhered to his own clear poetry view, and he was a figure who tried to write his own individual poetry through criticism and reflection on the harmful effect of the poetical circles of the time.
