국문 초록

본 연구는 2000년 이후 서원 연구가 활성화된 원인과 서원 연구의 동향을 각 분야별로 나누어 살펴보고, 향후 한국서원 연구의 과제에 대하여 전망해 보고자 하였다. 2000년 이후 서원 연구는 179편의 논문과 101권의 단행본 및 자료집이 간행되었다. 이것은 일제강점기 이후 1990년 중반까지 약 50년간 서원관계를 다룬 논문이 160여 편이었던 점과 비교하면 큰 폭으로 증가한 것이다. 연구 방향도 교육·정치·경제와 같이 기존 서원연구를 이끌어왔던 분야를 대신하여 사회·문화와 관련된 개별서원의 사례 연구가 증가하였다. 이 시기의 서원연구는 첫째, 이전까지 온축된 연구 성과를 종합적으로 정리하고, 새로운 연구방안에 대한 시험과 기존 서원 관계 자료의 정리가 활발하게 진행되었다. 둘째, 문화콘텐츠 개발과 전통 문화의 대중화라는 새로운 학문 풍토가 만들어졌다. 이러한 연구 환경의 변화에 대응하기 위한 자구책으로서 ‘한국서원학회’가 설립되었으며, 전문학술서보다는 대중들을 위한 교양서 간행이 증가하는 추세이다. 셋째, 단일 서원을 대상으로 한 학제 간 연구가 처음으로 시도되고 확대되었다. 이는 주요 독자가 연구자에서 일반 대중으로 변화된 것과 관련이 있다. 넷째, 디지털 시대에 맞춰 자료의 DB화가 가속화되고, 자료의 검색이 쉬워지면서 서원 연구의 질적인 제고와 양적인 증가를 견인하였다. 2000년 이전의 연구가 한국 서원 연구의 틀을 형성하는 거시적인 접근을 하였다면, 그 이후 현재까지 서원의 역사, 문화, 기능 등의 제반 사항에 대한 미시적 연구가 진행되면서 개개 서원의 구체적인 실체가 밝혀지고 있다. 그럼에도 불구하고 원생들의 원내 일상, 여가생활, 각종 의례 등과 같이 여전히 서원문화에 대해서는 알려지지 않은 부분이 많다. 따라서 서원 연구의 기초가 되는 서원자료의 수집과 정리, 가공은 계속 되어야 한다. 또한 서원문화의 현재적 계승과 한국 서원의 정체성과 보편성을 파악하기 위해서는 중국 및 동아시아 유교 문화권에 속한 국가들의 전통교육 기관과의 비교 연구가 확대될 필요성이 있다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to examine the reason why research on seowon has been actively done since 2000 and the research trends in different areas and find out tasks for further research on seowon in Korea. After 2000, 179 theses and 101 books and source books dealing with seowon have been published. This is a significant increase in consideration of the fact that only 160 or so theses dealing with seowon were published for about 50 years after the Japanese colonial era until the mid-1990’s. The research trends also changed. Previously research on seowon mostly dealt with education, politics, or economy, but recently, case studies on social or cultural aspects of individual seowon have been increasing. Research on seowon in that period was first intended to arrange the research results that had been accumulated up to then in general try new study plans and organize existing materials related to seowon. Second, a new academic climate was formed, the development of cultural contents and popularization of tradition culture. As a measure to cope with the environmental change of that research, ‘Korea Seowon Society’ was founded. Instead of specialized books, educational books targeting the public are being published more and more. Third, interdisciplinary research dealing with individual seowon was tried first, and it has been increasing. This is associated with the change of major readers from researchers to ordinary people. Fourth, in this digital age, materials are being changed into the form of a database rapidly, and it is becoming easier to search data. This has led to both qualitative and quantitative increase in research on seowon. Research before 2000 adopted macroscopic approaches to form a frame of research on seowon in Korea, but after then, microscopic research on seowon’s overall aspects, for instance, history, culture, or functions, has been carried out. This has revealed the concrete substance of each individual seowon. Despite that, still not much has been known regarding seowon culture such as the students’ routine in it, leisure life, and rituals held there. Therefore, it is needed to keep collecting, arranging, and processing data about seowon that are the basis of seowon research. Also, to transmit seowon culture correspondingly to our time and figure out the identity of seowon in Korea and its universality, it is necessary to increase research comparing ours with traditional education institutes in countries belonging to the sphere of Confucian culture like China or East Asia.
