임진왜란 시기 당항포해전의 전술적 특징과 해전사적 의미

국문 초록

임진왜란 극복의 주 동력인 조선 수군의 해전에 대해 살펴보는 것은 이순신의 활약상을 제대로 드러내는 데 기여하는 바가 클 것이다. 이순신이 주도한 3대해전 외에 해전사적 의미와 전술적 가치가 큰 해전이 바로 당항포해전이다. 먼저 1592년의 제1차 당항포해전은 이순신이 주도한 조선 수군의 제2차 출전 중 세 번째에 벌어진 해전이다. 이 해전에서의 승리는 다른 3번의 해전과 함께 한산도해전의 배경이 되었다는 면에서 해전사적인 의미를 부여할 수 있다. 부가하여 이 해전의 배경이 되는 사천해전에서는 기존 연구 성과와 달리 15척의 일본 군선을 격침시켰음을 알 수 있었다. 아울러 당항포해전에서도 기존 연구 성과와 달리 28척의 적선을 격침 시켰음을 확인할 수 있었다. 다음으로 1594년에 벌어진 제2차 당항포해전은 임진왜란 강화교섭이 진행되던 시기에 벌어진 해전이다. 당시 조선 수군은 임진왜란 초기와 다르게 막강한 수군력을 보유하고 있었다. 그렇지만 이 해전에서 이순신은 매우 주도면밀한 작전을 수립하여 일본군을 일망타진하였음을 알 수 있다. 다만 제2차 당항포해전은 임진년의 당항포해전에 비해 교전형태가 다소 차이가 있었다. 임진년의 해전에서는 상호 공방전에 의한 해상전투의 비중이 컸지만, 2차 해전에서는 대부분 일본군들이 육지로 도망가 버린 상황에서 남아 있는 빈 배들을 분멸시킨 것이 차이점이라 할 것이다. 2차례의 당항포해전을 통해 이순신의 해전술 발휘에의 전형적인 모습을 확인할 수 있다. 이를테면 이순신은 준비단계에서 적정에 대한 정보를 얻은 후 치밀한 사전 조치를 취하고 있음을 알 수 있다. 아울러 공격 단계에서는 적 대장선에 대한 선제 기습공격을 하는 등 적 상황에 맞춰서 적절한 해전술을 구사하였다. 그러나 조선 수군의 작전구사에는 한계도 있었다. 이순신은 적을 완벽하게 제압하기 위해서는 수륙합공이 절실하다는 점을 항상 강조했지만, 육군의 능력 부족 때문에 현실적으로 이루어지지 못한 것이 당시 전투 양상이었음을 2차례의 당항포해전을 통해 확인할 수 있다. 한편 이순신은 사안에 따라 자신의 지휘권을 위임하기도 했다. 또한 당시 수군의 전투 편제는 육전에 사용하던 병법을 수군에서 창의적으로 적용하고 있었다. 2차례의 당항포해전은 해전사적으로도 의미를 가진다. 제1차 당항포 해전의 경우 해전 승리를 통해 임진왜란이라는 절체절명의 위기 상황을 극복할 수 있다는 자신감을 갖게 되었다는 점을 들 수 있다. 제2차 당항포해전은 임진왜란 강화기 일본군의 만행을 종식시키고 서진의지를 약화시키는 데 크게 기여한 해전이었다.

영문 초록

It will be a meaningful study on the Joseon(Korean) Navy Forces which did the crucial role on the battles during Imjin War, and it will be definitely connected to look into the Admiral Yi Sun-sin’s works. The 3 great naval battles lead by Yi was notable, however, Danghang- po naval battle gives much strategical points for the war history with the importance of tactics. First, this first Danghang-po naval battle in 1592 is the third battle of Yi’s second operations of three in total. It can be the crucial point of the war history of sea that the victory of this battle along the other three naval battles gave the effort for the Great naval battle at Hansan-do (The Great Hansan-do naval battle). For the correcting information, Sacheon naval battle which became a cause of Hansan-do naval battle accomplished to sink 15 Japanese warships. Also, I have found that Joseon’s Navy Forces sank 28 Japanese warships. This differs from the previous studies. The 2nd Danghang-po naval battle broke out during the negotiation period. Having the dragging talk, Joseon’s Navy could reinforce their internal power not like the earlier phase of the war. This time, Yi made remarkable strategies towards the enemies and demolished them. Simply, it has different naval battle aspects on the 2nd Danghang-po naval battle from the naval battle in 1592. The naval battle in 1592 was interactional at any, and the 2nd naval battle at the same place was the condition which Japanese troops were fleed away to on land and incinerated empty vessels. Yi’s incredible ability by having the twice naval battle at the same point had been proved. For instance, prior to opening the naval battle, Yi gathered information of Japanese camp and made precise plans for the naval battle. Moreover, he showed proper tactics of each state extending the duration of the naval battle like attacking first the master ship. However, Joseon Navy had its won problem not to cope. Yi always raised his voice that Joseon troops had to have the allied troops of army and navy to be succeeded, but the Joseon Army was far away to be with Yi’s strategies. It can be read this point through two battles at Danghang-po naval battle as well. Interestingly, Yi sometimes took his commandership over to other when it comes. The formation of his was recreated from the army’s military tactics. These twice battles at Danghang-po gives some points towards war history of sea. Korean Navy could strive and accomplish the harsh moment of the horrible Imjin War from the 1st Danghang-po naval battle, and the 2nd battle gave critical stroke to enemy who brutally abused Korean during the dragging negotiation talk.
