이순신의 ‘홍익(弘益)리더십’ 고찰

국문 초록

리더십 연구는 인간의 본질에 대한 철학적 탐구와 실천적인 삶을 동시에 다루어야 한다. 한 사람의 행동과 업적은 그 사람의 고유한 정신과 주어진 환경에 대응한 결과이기 때문에 어느 한쪽만 보는 오류를 범하지 않아야 한다. 덕능겸비(德能兼備)의 장수 이순신의 위대한 업적도 공의 고결한 정신과 조선 중기의 전쟁 상황에 대처한 삶의 결과였다. 공이 후손들에게 유산으로 남겨준 불멸의 정신은 우리 민족의 고유 사상이 결부된 유학(儒學)의 인의예지신을 실천한 군자(君子)의 품격이었다. 이 정신이 이순신의 경영의 원리였으며 리더십은 근본이었다. 자신의 본분을 다하며 바르게 ‘살려는 마음’ 충(忠)과 내가 원하지 않는 것을 다른 사람에게 하지 않는 ‘남을 살리려는 마음’ 서(恕)에 뿌리를 둔 유학 사상이었다. 본 논문은 고조선의 개국 정신이자 대한민국의 건국이념이며 교육이념으로 삼고 있는 홍익인간(弘益人間) 정신을 계승하여 이순신의 리더십을 ‘홍익(弘益)리더십’으로 명명(命名)했다. 이순신이 성장하면서 갈고 닦은 수기안백성(修己安百姓)의 덕(德)과 이를 실현하여 나라와 백성을 구한 업적(能)을 동시에 다루었다. 공의 덕능겸비(德能兼備) 리더십의 양면을 분석하여 ①충효 섬김의 리더십, ②꿈과 희망의 리더십, ③신상필벌의 리더십, ④정의실현의 리더십, ⑤유비무환의 리더십, ⑥창의 혁신의 리더십, ⑦생활 기록의 리더십, ⑧시적(詩的) 승화의 리더십, ⑨한마음(一心)의 리더십으로 정리했다. 또한 ① ② ③ ⑧ ⑨는 인화(人和)로 관계 형성에 발휘된 ‘덕(德)의 리더십’이고, 나머지 ④ ⑤ ⑥ ⑦은 창의(創意)와 혁신으로 과업 달성을 실현했던 ‘능(能)의 리더십’으로 구분했다.

영문 초록

Admiral Yi, Sun-sin was a great general and a representative wise man(君子) in Joseon Period. He was one who had both virtue(德) and ability(能). His life was the composition of ‘loyalty(忠)’ to fulfill his duty and ‘mercy (恕)’to do as he would be done by. Yi Sun-sin realized the virtue of ‘su-gi-an-in(修己安人, self-discipline to prosper others) by means of in-ui-ye-ji-shin(仁義禮智信, love-righteousness-courtesy-wisdom-trust) originated in Confucianism philosophy which he studied when young to prepare the state examination. The virtue was, and is the principle of human management and the root of leadership in eastern Asia society. This is the first key to understand and study the leadership of Yi Sun-sin. The second key to understand his knowledge on the tactics and management in war demonstrated during seven-year war to enemy forces in the northern territory and southern sea of Korea in the 16th century. This study, firstly, explained the Confucian philosophy deductively, and named Yi Sun-sin’s leadership The Humanitarian(弘益人間) Leadership of Yi Sun-sin, which was succeeded to the founding principle of Korea, the spirit of humanitarian, which means to benefit everyone widely. As the life of Yi Sun-sin itself was benefiting everyone widely, it is a appropriate name. Secondly, I analysed inductively the nine items of virtue of the leadership of Yi Sun-sin from his whereabouts in the documents written by him. The Korea of today is separated into political, social several different parties because of ideological conflict. We have to overcome such a situation realizing the Humanitarian Leadership of Yi Sun-sin. We have an important mission to teach his spirit to next generation in Korea, and to the world people on earth.
