이순신의 완전한 리더십

국문 초록

필자는 이순신의 리더십을 <완전한 리더십>으로 명명하였다. <완전한 리더십>이란 전문성과 혁신 역량에 기초하여 괄목할 만한 성과를 창출하고 창출한 성과 속에 인류의 보편적 가치가 내재되어 있으며, 언제나 자기 자신 보다는 조직 공동체(나라/백성)를 앞세우는 고결한 인격까지를 갖춘 리더십 그리고 그 리더십이 구성원들에게 꿈과 희망을 주어 궁극적으로 구성원들을 모두 행복하게 하는 리더십이다. 이순신의 리더십은 이런 조건을 모두 만족한다. 이순신은 언제나 우세한 상황을 만들어 놓고 해전을 벌어 완벽한 승리를 이끌어냈으며, 무기체계의 변화를 적극 수용하여 거북선이라는 최첨단 돌격선을 창제하였다. 그리고 아무런 이유없이 조선을 침략한 일본군에 대해서는 하늘을 대신하여 철저히 응징하여 <정의가 승리하는 역사를 만들어야 한다>는 역사의식, 가치의식의 소유자였다. 또한 이순신 주변에는 전문적 역량을 지닌 지휘관, 참모들로 넘쳐났을 뿐만 아니라 의병, 승병 나아가 수많은 백성들이 몰려들었다. 자기 자신보다는 언제나 나라와 백성과 의리를 앞세우는 이순신의 고결한 인격에 감화되었기 때문이다. 나아가 이순신 곁에 있으면 살 수 있다는 꿈과 희망이 있었기 때문이었다. 탁월한 <전문성>과 혁신역량을 바탕으로 임진왜란 극복이라는 괄목할만한 성과를 창출하고 <역사의식/가치의식>과 <고결한 인격>을 바탕으로 인류의 보편적 가치인 정의로운 역사 만들기에 매진한 이순신 그리고 나아가 리더십의 궁극의 목적은 구성원들에게 <꿈과 희망을 주고, 행복하게 하는 것>이라는 메시지를 내포하고 있는 이순신의 리더십은 그 자체 <완전한 리더십>이라 불러 손색이 없다.

영문 초록

The author designated Yi Sun Sin’s leadership as the ‘complete leadership’. The ‘complete leadership’ is founded on professionalism and innovative capability to create outstanding achievements, and the universal value of humanity that is inherent within those achievements. It also has a noble character that puts the organized community (country/the people) before itself, ultimately making all the members happy by filling them with hopes and dreams. Yi Sun Sin’s leadership satisfies all of these conditions. Yi Sun Sin always waged a naval war after creating a superior situation, which then led to an outright victory. He too invented a state-of-the-art assault ship named ‘Turtle Ship’ by actively accepting the innovation of constantly shifting weapon system. Also, Yi Sun Sin was a man of historical and value consciousness who carried out his philosophy of ‘history in which justice wins must be made’ by punishing the Japanese forces that invaded Joseon without reason, according to the will of god. In addition, not only were there many commanding officers and advisors of professional competency, but also an army raised in the cause of justice, monk soldiers, and even the people gathered for him. The reason behind this was because they were swayed by Yi Sun Sin, who was a man of high character that put the country, its people, and loyalty before himself. Furthermore, standing by Yi Sun Sin’s side itself filled them with hopes and dreams that they could survive the war. Yi Sun Sin overcame the Japanese Invasion of Joseon based on outstanding ‘professionalism’ and innovative capability, a result worthy of close attention, and strived to make a just history, which is humanity’s universal values, based on ‘historical consciousness/value consciousness’and ‘noble character’. Furthermore, Yi Sun Sin’s leadership, which contains the message that the ultimate purpose of leadership is ‘filling the members with dreams and hopes and making them happy’, indubitably qualifies to be labeled the ‘complete leadership’ itself.
