국문 초록

류성룡은 임진왜란을 맞아 국정의 최고 관료로서 전란를 극복하는 데 가장 큰 역할을 하였 다. 그는 임란기 역할과 활동에 대한 정당한 평가를 받지 못한 채, 예상치 못한 상황에서 발생한 정응태 무고사건으로 정치적 위기를 맞았다. 류성룡이 이 무고사건을 변무하기 위한 진주사에 자원하지 않은 것은 탄핵의 빌미가 되었고, 대간들은 그의 임란 책임론을 거론하여 류성룡을 집요하게 탄핵하였다. 이와 같은 대간들의 류성룡에 대한 탄핵은 임란기 그의 책임론을 넘어서, 그를 문묘종사와 조종조에 해악을 끼친 간인으로 지목하기에 이르렀다. 또한 류성룡이 실각한 후에도 조정에서는 그의 임란기 활동에 대한 전면적인 비판이 일어 나면서 그 책임론은 가열되었다. 이와 더불어 북인들은 류성룡이 일본과 화의를 주장했다고 하는 혐의를 제기하면서, 이에 동조한 인사들에 대한 탄핵으로 이어갔다. 따라서 류성룡에게 북인들이 제기했던 전란의 책임론과 화의에 대한 비판은 어떻게는 풀어야 하는 과제가 되었다. 이와 같은 정치적 위기의 순간에 류성룡은 징비록을 찬술하였다. 그 찬술 의도는 임란에 대한 반성과 함께 전란의 책임론에 대한 자기변호와 남인들의 정치적 위상을 재고하기 위해서였다. 이를 위해 류성룡은 징비록에서 상황적 근거를 들어 자신에게 제기된 문제들을 철저하게 반박하였다. 첫째, 일본의 침략을 받은 것은 일본과의 失和가 그 근본 원인이 라고 지적하였다. 둘째, 이순신을 징비록 서술의 중심에 세우고 원균과 상호 비교하여 서술하였다. 이러한 의도는 임란 전공을 둘러싼 선조와 조정 대신들의 공신책봉 논리를 전면 적으로 비판하기 위해서였다. 따라서 류성룡은 정치적 위기의 상황에서 징비록의 찬술을 통해서 자신에게 제기된 책임론을 철저하게 비판하여 그 혐의를 벗고자 하였다. 또한 그는 이순신을 징비록 서술의 중심으로 내세움으로써, 임란기 자신의 정치적 활동에 대한 정당한 평가를 받고자 했다. 그렇게 함으로써 류성룡은 자신과 남인의 정치적 정당성을 확보하고자 했던 것이다.

영문 초록

Ryu Seongryong, as the highest ranking bureaucrat of national administration during the Japanese invasions in the late 16th century, played the most important role in overcoming the invasions. However, without receiving just assessment of his role and activities during the invasions, he faced a political crisis when false accusations were leveled against him due to the unexpected outbreak of the Jeong Eungtae case. He did not volunteer for the Jin Jusa post for self-justification against the false charges, became a target of impeachment and the censorate tenaciously impeached Ryu Seongryong for his responsibility for the invasions. These accusations by the censorate against Ryu went beyond responsibility for the invasions and he came to be portrayed as a villainous retainer who had done harm to the royal ancestral shrine and forefathers. Even after his fall from power, a full scale criticism of his activities during the invasions arose in the royal court, and the question of his responsibility for the invasions was taken up even further. In addition, the Northerner faction raised the accusation that Ryu Seongryong had advocated peace talks with the Japanese and impeachment was expanded to include those who had cooperated with him. The charges against him raised by the Northerner faction of his responsibility and peace talk attempts with the Japanese became an obstacle Ryu had to overcome using whichever means. In this moment of political crisis, Ryu Seongryong compiled the Jingbirok. The intent of compilation was to reflect on the invasions, self-justification for the charges raised against him and to raise the political standing of the Southerner faction. For this purpose, Ryu Seongryong cited circumstantial evidence and thoroughly refuted the charges leveled against him. First, he pointed out that the fundamental cause of the invasions was the breach of peace with the Japanese. Second, at the center of compilation was placed Yi Sun Sin, with mutual comparisons made with Won Gyun in the compilation. The intent was to thoroughly criticize King Seonjo and his ministers regarding the rewarding of meritorious retainers for their services during the war. Therefore in a situation of political crisis, Ryu Seongryong wished to thoroughly refute the charges against him and clear himself of accusations through the compilation of the Jingbirok. Also, by placing Yi Sun Sin at the center of the Jingbirok, he wished to receive a just assessment of his own political activities during the war. In so doing, he wished to secure political legitimacy for himself and the Southerner faction.
