명량해전 승리요인의 재조명 - 판옥선의 전투력, 병법, 리더십을 중심으로-

국문 초록

이 글은 명량해전의 승리요인을 규명하기 위한 것이다. 이제까지 명량해전 승리요인의 첫번째 요소는 ‘철쇄설치설’이었다. 그런데 ‘철쇄설치설’의 가장 큰 약점은 명량해전에 참여한 조선의 리더인 이순신이 쓴 《난중일기》에 기록되어 있지 않다는 것이다. 전쟁에서 승리하 려면 함선의 성능이나 무기체계와 같은 하드웨어적 전투력 요소와 리더의 전략전술이나 리더십 같은 소프트웨어적 전투력 요소의 합이 적 보다 우위에 있어야 한다. 필자가 제기한 명량해전의 승리요인은 첫째, 판옥선의 막강한 전투력 둘째, 이순신의 뛰어난 병법 셋째, 이순신의 탁월한 리더십이다. 당시 조선 수군의 주력 전투함이었던 판옥선에는 대형 화약무기인 함포가 설치되어 있었 다. 반면에 일본 수군은 함포를 설치하지 못했거나 설치했다 하더라도 적극적으로 운용하지 못했음이 확실시 된다. 이것이 판옥선 13척으로 일본 수군 함선 133척과 대응할 수 있었던첫 번째 이유이다. 이순신은 13척으로 수 백 척의 일본 수군 함대를 대응하기 위해 명량의 좁은 물목을 해전 장소로 택하였다. 명량의 좁은 물목 밖에 위치한 조선 수군은 13척이 모두 동시에 전투력을 발휘했지만 명량의 좁은 물목 안에 위치한 일본 수군은 수 백 척의 전투력을 동시에 발휘할수 없었다. 이것이 이순신이 명량의 좁은 물목을 해전 장소로 택한 이유이며, 명량해전 승리의 두 번째 요소이다. 수 백 척의 일본 함선이 몰려오자 조선 수군은 공포에 질려 버렸다. 그러나 조선 수군의 최고 리더 이순신은 몸소 선두에 서서 돌진하였다. 그리고 죽기를 각오하고 싸우도록 독려 하였다. 명량해전을 준비하는 동안 많은 호남의 백성들이 이순신을 도왔다. 그리고 병사들이 자진해서 몰려들었다. 조선의 군, 관, 민의 전투 역량을 하나로 통합한 이순신의 리더십! 이것이 명량해전 승리의 세 번째 요소이다. 결론적으로 함포로 무장한 판옥선, 이순신의 뛰어난 군사전문성과 리더십이 결합되어 시너 지화된 막강한 전투력이 명량해전의 승리요인이었다. 이렇게 볼 때 ‘철쇄설치설’은 역사적사실이 아니며 조상들의 전쟁 영웅담에서 만들어진 ‘설화성 이야기’로 이해하는 것이 좋은 것이다.

영문 초록

This study is trying to find the main reasons why Admiral Yi won at Myungryang Sea Battle. Until now it has been argued that the iron-chain theory was the primary reason of the victory in Myungryang Sea Battle. However, the critical weakness of this theory is that the iron-chain theory were never mentioned in the Admiral Yi s War Diary. In order to defeat the enemy in the war, we should be better prepared both in the hardware like warships and military weapons and in the software like military strategies and leadership than the enemy. In this thesis I propose that the 3 main reasons why we won at Myungryang Sea Battle are; the fighting power of Panok-ship[Chosun s main war ship], the excellent war strategy of Admiral Yi, and Admiral Yi s leadership. At that time, Panok-ship, the main war vessels of Chosun, were provided with big naval gun and Chosun seaman could control them very well while Japanese naval vessels were not provided with naval guns or Japanese navy couldn t control them well. This is the first reason why Chosun navy with only 13 Panok-ship could defeat the Japanese navy with 133 warships. Admiral Yi chose the narrow stream at Myungramg strait to fight against Japanese warships. As a result, all the warships of Chosun could maneuvered effectively in the narrow stream while several hundreds of Japanese warships couldn t in the stream, which was already predicted by Admiral Yi. This is the second reason Admirl Yi could defeat the Japanese warships in Myungrang Ses Battle.At first, all of the Chosun seamen were afraid of hundreds of Japanese war vessels. However, Admiral Yi, the leader of Chosun navy, took the lead and rushed toward the enemy. He urged all the seamen to fight desperately. In preparation of Myungrang Sea Battle many people in Honam[south-west district of Korea] gave much help to Admiral Yi and served as seamen voluntarily. The unification of all the abilities of seamen, officers, and people is the third reason why Admiral Yi could win Myungrang Sea Battle. I could conclude that both the synergy of Panok-ship with naval guns, and diverse strategic knowledge and excellent leadership of Admiral are the main reason that we could defeat the Japanese navy. From this point of view, the iron-chain theory is not supported by historical reality but is a legendary story invented by people.
