<숙향전>에 나타난 ‘고통’의 문학적 해석

국문 초록

<최치원 >, <만 복사저포기>, <이 생규장전>, <하생기우전>, <운영전> 등의 서사 안에서 거듭 육체적 소멸을 경험한 여주인공은 조선 후 기, 변모하는 시대상과 세계관에 맞춰 < 사씨남정기>, <구운몽>, <최척 전>, <춘향전 > 등의 서사 안에서 죽음의 세계를 부정하고 현실세계의 관습과 제도에 맞서 ‘고통’을 감내하는 강한 생명력의 주인공으로 재탄생한다. <숙향전>은 그 일련의 문학적 관습 위에 선 작품이다. <숙향전>에 나타난 ‘고통’의 형상화는 두 가지 양상으로 나타난다. ‘고통’은 우선 여주인공을 육체적 소멸 주체로서 형상화한다. 숙향은 전통적이고도 관습적인 육체적 소멸 주체로서의 형상을 보여주는 인물이 다. 유기, 투신, 유랑 , 불구, 수장, 투살 등으로 인한 육체적 소멸을 경험하는 주체이다. 당대의 제도권 하에서 보호 받지 못한 채 소외되었던 여성의 고통을 형상화한 양상이다. <숙향전>의 ‘고통’은 또한 영적 초월과 속박의 형상화 양상으로 나타 난다. 이선에게는 현실계의 억압에서 벗어나 자유를 구가하는 곳이 초월 계라면, 숙향에게는 오히려 현실계의 억압을 더욱 강조하는 속박의 형상으로 초월계가 그려진다. ‘고통’의 양상이 초월과 속박으로 나타난 것은 그만큼 복잡한 삶의 다양성을 드러내기 위한 문학적 방편에서 기인한다. ‘고통’의 문학적 기능은 우선 노정형 서사의 완급 조절에 기여하는 측면에서 찾아볼 수 있다. <숙향전>은 정착지를 떠나 일정한 목적지로 떠났다가 귀환하는 노정형 서사의 전형을 보여준다. ‘고통’은 노정형 서사의 완급을 조절하고, 그 이면에 당대인의 삶을 새겨 놓는 기능을 한다. ‘고통’은 또한 수계(水界) 공간의 변주와 확대에 기 여한다. 수계 공간의 설정은 현실계의 문제를 해소하는 기능을 한다. <숙향전>은 남녀주인공의 각기 다른 ‘고통’의 형상화를 통해 당대의 민 중이 처해 있던 억압과 핍박은 물론 현실 문제를 초월계로 옮겨 해소해 보고자 하는 관료의식, 혹은 행복한 삶을 염원하는 인간의 본성을 구현한다.

영문 초록

The heroine who had repeatedly experienced the physical extinction in the narratives such as Choi Chi Won , Manboksajeopogi , Leesaenggyujangjeon , Hasaenggiwoojeon , Woonyoungjeon , is reborn as a heroine with strong vitality that endures ‘pain’ against the customs and institutions of the real world, denies the world of death in the narratives such as Sassinamjeonggi , Guwoonmong , Choicheokjeon , Chunhyangjeon in accordance with the changing phases of the times, and the world view in the late Chosun. Sukhyangjeon is the work based on a series of literary conventions. The imagery of ‘pain’ represented in Sukhyangjeon is expressed into two aspects. ‘Pain’ embodies the heroine as the subject of physical extinction. Sukhyang is a figure that shows the image as a traditional and customary physical extinction. It is the subject that experiences the physical extinction due to abandonment, drowning oneself, wandering, deformity, buried at sea and stone to death. It is the aspect that embodies the pain of the woman who has been left out of the protection under the mainstream system at that time. The ‘pain’ of Sukhyangjeon is also expressed into the imaginary aspects of spiritual transcendence and restriction. If the place is a transcendent world where he can enjoy the freedom escaped out of the oppression of the real world for Lee Sun, the transcendent world is expressed into the image of restraint that emphasizes the oppression of the real world for Sukhyang. The fact that the aspect of ‘pain’ is expressed into the transcendence and restriction, is due to the literary way to reveal the complex life diversity. The literacy function of ‘pain’ can be searched from the aspect that contributes to the tempo control of road movie type narrative. Sukhyangjeon show the typical pattern of road movie type narratives that leave the settlement for certain destination and return. ‘Pain’ adjusts the tempo of road movie type narratives, functions to carve the life at that time. ‘Pain’ also contributes to expansion and variation of the water related space. The setting of the water related space functions to solve the problem of the real world. Sukhyangjeon realizes the oppression and persecution faced by the people at that time through imagery of each different “pain” of male and female characters. In addition, it realizes the bureaucracy that attempts to solve the problem of real world by moving it to the transcendence world, or the human nature that desires for a happy life.
