Characteristics of Word Reading according to Word Condition in Normal Adults

국문 초록

배경 및 목적: 정상 성인기에는 읽기 처리과정이 완전 습득되어 안정된 단계이므로 제시되는 단어의 어휘성(lexicality)이나 철자규칙성(regularity)에 따라 읽기의 음운통로와 어휘통로를 선택하여 규칙 단어, 불규칙 단어, 규칙 비단어 읽기를 수행한다. 본 연구에서는 20대에서 80대까지의 정상 성인을 대상으로 불규칙 비단어를 포함한 다양한 단어 조건 하에서의 읽기 수행력을 확인하고자 하였다. 방법: 정상 성인 남녀 120명을 대상으로 청년 집단(20-39세 40명), 중년 집단(40-59세 40명), 노년 집단(60-89세 40명)의 세 집단으로 나눈 후 다양한 조건의 ‘소리내어 읽기’ 과제를 실시하였다. 결과: 단어 조건에 따른 세 집단 간 차이를 살펴본 결과, 불규칙 단어와 규칙 비단어에서 노년 집단이 청년(p<.001), 중년(p=.001)집단에 비해 유의미한 수행력 저하를 보였다. 불규칙 비단어에서는 노년 집단이 청년집단(p=.002)에 비해 수행력이 통계적으로 저하되었다. 논의 및 결론: 이러한 결과는 자소와 음소가 대응되지 않는 불규칙 단어를 읽기 위한 어휘통로가 노화에 따라 영향을 받을 수 있음을 보여준다. 또한 불규칙 비단어를 읽기 위해서는 음운통로와 더불어 어휘통로를 통해 음운조건이 유사한 단어의 음운변동을 차용하여 읽어야 하므로 인지적 부담이 가중되는 것으로 설명할 수 있다. 종합해보면, 정상 노화과정에서 언어능력 및 인지기능의 감퇴와 주의력 감소는 어휘통로의 정보를 사용하는 능력에 영향을 줄 수 있고 복잡한 인지적 처리가 요구되는 읽기의 경우 노화에 더 영향을 받을 수 있음을 시사한다.

영문 초록

Objective: This study intended to identify reading characteristics according to various word conditions (regular words, irregular words, and regular nonwords) in normal adults in their 20s to 80s, considering phonological and lexical routes of reading. Methods: This study classified 120 normal adults into a younger group (20-39 years), middle-age group (40-59 years), and older group (60-89 years), and conducted a reading aloud task under various conditions. Results: The performance of the older group decreased in irregular words and regular nonwords compared to the younger (p<.001) and middle age (p=.001) groups. For irregular nonwords, performance of the older group decreased compared to the younger group (p=.002). Conclusion: The results show that lexical routes for reading irregular words with graphemes and phonemes not corresponding to each other are affected by aging. This signifies that the cognitive load for reading irregular nonwords grows with age; these nonwords should be read by borrowing phonological changes in words with similar phonological conditions through phonological and lexical routes. To sum up, declines in language ability and cognitive functioning and reduced attention during the normal aging process can affect the ability to use information through lexical routes, and reading that requires complex cognitive processing is more affected by aging.
