Alternative tourism and regional tourism development are paramount for the competitiveness and the sustainability of tourism destination. This paper focuses on future potential strategies to promote alternative tourism in a naturally, archeologically, and culturally rich but neglected region, in terms of well-structured tourism products, the case of the South-East of Tunisia (the three governorates of Tataouine, Medenine, and Gabes). The methodology used consists of three complementary stages. An in-depth diagnosis of the selected regions’ potentials and values, a benchmarking evaluation, of similar international regions and a content analysis of the previously collected data, to pinpoint the mostly adequate strategies to be implemented in the South-East of Tunisia. The main results conclude that the three governorates of the South-East of Tunisia, which are completely under-positioned, need to be promoted as complementary but unique tourism products under the positioning of ‘Original’ and ‘Durable’ destination, and each governorate needs to be considered as ‘a tourism destination’, on its own right and as a ‘must see destination even for short hauls’.
