국문 초록

이 연구는 기장 지역의 역사와 문화에 대한 연구 방법과 내용을 논의하는데 목적이 있다. 이를 위하여 기존의 연구 성과를 중심으로 문제 중심의 거시적인 구도 위에서 기장 지역 연구에 대한 방향을 제안하려는 것이다. 기장 지역은 조선시대 독립된 군현이었으나 한양에서 멀리 떨어진 연안지역으로 문과급제자를 한명도 배출하지 못한 주변적인 지역에 속한다. 그럼에도 이 지역에서 식민지기 이후 김약수나 김두봉, 이하영과 같은 역사적 인물이 배출되었다. 나아가 철마의 해주 오씨, 남평 문씨 등 오랜 역사를 가진 가문이 근대 이후 새롭게 변화하는 모습도 볼 수 있다. 이같이 조선시대 두드러진 주변성과 근대 격동기 이후 중요 인물의 배출과 같은 새로운 변화를 기장 역사 문화의 단절과 지속성의 관계에 대한 논의의 중요구도로 설정하였다. 기장 지역에 대한 연구는 고고학적 자료와 관찬 자료를 편찬하여 사실을 축적하는 것이 대부분이다. 이러한 방식으로는 국가제도와 지역 속에서 여기에 대응하여 생활하고 역사를 만들어간 지역사회와 지역민의 모습을 보는 것은 힘들 것이다. 오래전부터 기장을 비롯하여 부산 경남 일원에 대한 조사 연구를 수행해온 필자를 포함함 고문서 조사 연구팀은 이러한 동향을 문제 삼아 왔다. 자료 발굴도 단순히 자료 수합이 아닌 중앙 중심의 역사 나아가 엘리트 중심의 한국사의 문제점을 해결한다는 구도 위에서 접근하였다. 그리하여 기장과 같은 주변부 지역의 향반 가문들의 사회적 지위 유지는 외부와의 연망과 양반들의 조직, 통혼권과 같은 문화적 자산이 적지 않게 작용한 사실을 알 수 있었다. 이것은 기장 지역사회가 다른 지역과 마찬가지로 한국사회의 동질적인 모습을 보여준다. 그렇기 때문에 근현대 이 후 이 지역에서 중요 인물이 배출된 것은 전근대 이전과 크게 대조된다. 중앙에서 멀리 떨어진 주변부에 속하는 기장 지역에서 근현대 한국을 만든 다수의 인물들이 배출되었다. 이렇듯 근대 이후 진출하는 양상은 개항 이후 부산이 급속히 성장하면서 기장이 그 배후지로서 급격한 변화를 겪은 것과 관련이 있다. 이는 근대 문물의 수용으로 더 넓은 곳으로의 진출을 가능하게 하였으며 이로 인해 근대 이후 중요한 인문들이 배출될 수 있는 환경이 조성되었던 것이다. 바로 이점에서 기장의 역사는 전근대와 근현대를 아우르는 지평 위에서 그 실체를 재현할 수 있을 것이며 주변부에서 배후지로의 변화를 논의하는 이유가 여기에 있다.

영문 초록

This study is to discuss what is an issue and how do we study on the history and culture of Gijang area. I would like to propose the future direction of area study around Gijang be studied with the big picture based on existing researches. Due to it's location as coastal area far from the capital city, Hanyang, which was independent county(郡), Gijang is known as the peripheral area where no one had not passed Monkwa-Examination. Nevertheless, throughout the colonial period, the important people in Korean history such as Kim yaksu(金若水), Kim dubong(金枓奉), Yi hayoung(李夏榮) came out in the perpheral area, Gijang. Many lineages like Haeju Oh Family(海州 吳氏), Nam-Pyoung Mun(南平 文氏) Family who were old family of Gijang had been also changed newly in modern society. Therefore I use remarkable marginality and new changes as a tool to discuss the relationship between continuation and discontinuation of historical culture of Gijang, which explains why many important people as politician appeared from this area throughout turbulent era, although Gijang had been paid little attention due to it's location during Choseon era. Researches on Gijang area so far have been limited on archeology and historiography of public records. They may make it invisible and trivial for the local community and its residents to cope with the government and find their own way. Therefore I think the approach for resolving some problems of korean history like stated-centered and elite-centered narratives is still required when discovering and using local data. On the other hand, the fact a few famous people in modern Korea came out from Gijang, known as the peripheral area, is connected to Busan's rapid growth and it's following change of Gijang from the periphery to the hinterland. It made local people go into the world through adoption of modern culture, and created the environment for the emergence of people who are historical important at the same time. Considering this aspect, the history of Gijang needs to be discussed with a wider perspectives covering pre-modern and modern Korea. That's why we will reveal the process of change to hinterland, and furthermore make it reproduction of the reality of Gijang.
