병부과장식석검과 그 제작 집단에 대한 시론

국문 초록

본 글은 우리나라에서 극히 희소한 사례에 해당하는 김해 무계리와 부산 괴정동 출토 석검을 대상으로 그 제작 성격을 추론하는 데 목적을 두고 있다. 이 석검들의 손잡이는 경직된 디자인을 바탕으로 하고 있으며, 심부와 병두의 길이가 과도하게 길다는 점이 특징이다. 또한 이렇게 손잡이가 과장된 석검들이 낙동강 하류역에만 분포하고 있는 점도 또 다른 특색이다. 필자는 이상의 연구 목적을 위하여 병부가 현격하게 과장된 석검을 ‘병부과장식석검(柄部誇張式石劍)’으 로 별칭하고, 그들과 관련된 기본 모티브 또는 같은 범주의 석검을 찾아 그 관계성을 파악해보았다. 그 결과, 이러한 석검들의 도안적 친연성과 분포를 바탕으로 여수반도 지역과 낙동강 하류역이 매우 긴밀한 관 계에 있음을 추론할 수 있었다. 그리고 완전한 병부과장식석검에 이르기까지에는 기본 형태 및 과장 전조 (前兆) 단계, 과장화(誇張化) 단계가 존재함을 확인할 수 있었다. 이에 기본 형태와 과장 전조 단계를 Ⅰ기, 과장화 단계를 Ⅱ기, 과장 단계를 Ⅲ기로 구분해보았다. Ⅲ기에 해당하는 병부과장식석검은 낙동강 하류역에, Ⅰ기와 Ⅱ기에 해당하는 석검은 여수반도에 집중 분포하고 있어 병부의 과장 양상이 여수반도에서 시작되었을 가능성을 제시할 수 있었다. 이러한 결과를 바탕으로 여수반도 지역에는 지석묘 문화를 배경으로 하는 전문 장인 집단이 존재하였고,완전한 병부과장식석검은 유통망을 통해 낙동강 하류역으로 유입되었을 것으로 추론하였다.

영문 초록

This study aims to provide plausible explanations on the provenance of polished stone dag¬gers that came to represent the Korean Bronze Age dagger style despite their scarce pres¬ence. These stone daggers, excavated from the Mugye-ri site at Gimhae and the Goejeong-dong site at Busan, are characterized by overly extended guards and pommels. Interestingly, daggers with exaggerated hilts have been discovered only in the lower reach of Nakdonggang River. This study examines the polished stone daggers discovered in the Nakdonggang River area as referred to be as a Stone Dagger with an Exaggerated Hilt and identifies characteristic elements of their basic form. Examination of artifacts in terms of their design and geo¬graphic distribution pattern revealed that the daggers excavated in the Yeosu Peninsula and the lower reach of Nakdonggang River are closely related. It also shows that it had to go through three production stages to attain its final form: preliminary, intermediate, and final phases. Comparison between artifacts from these two areas leads to the conclusion that daggers from the Yeosu Peninsula were almost in the preliminary stage whereas those from the lower reach of Nakdonggang River were in the final Stage, suggesting that the last stage of production to make an exaggerated hilt was carried out in the Yeosu area. It is concluded that the daggers were produced by a group of specialist artisans who were relat¬ed with the dolmen culture that flourished around the Yeosu area and daggers were distrib¬uted to the lower Nakdonggang area through a trade route.
