국문 초록

바오로 탄생 2000주년을 맞아 가톨릭교회는 “바오로는 과연 누구인가?”라는 질문을 마주한다. 이 소고는 이 질문에 대답하기 위하여 초세기와 루터의 종교 개혁 시기 그리고 20세기 중반 제2차 세계 대전이라는 역사의 흐름 속에서 교회의 바오로 이해가 어떤 변천을 겪었는지를 되짚어 보면서, 바오로에 대한 신학적 이해의 시대적 맥을 짚어 보고자 시도한다. 그러나 이 소고는 바오로의 모든 신학을 다루는 것이 아니라, 바오로와 유다이즘의 관계에 집중함으로써 바오로가 자신의 이중적 정체성, 즉 유다인이라는 민족적ㆍ종교적 정체성과 그리스도인이라는 실존적ㆍ종교적 정체성을 어떻게 신학적으로 극복하는지를 제시한다. 이 과정을 위해 기존 그리스도교 신학이 지녀온 유다이즘에 대한 튀빙겐 학파의 전통적 독일 루터파식 독해에 거리를 두면서 샌더스 이후 등장하는 “New Perspective on Paul”의 관점에서 출발하여 새로운 연구의 경향들을 소개하는 동시에 그 새로운 경향들이 남기는 새로운 과제들을 열거한다. 바오로는 기존 유다의 율법 체계를 통해 자신의 보편적 그리스도 체험을 수용할 수 있다고 보지 않았으며, 그것이 바오로 서간에 나타나는 율법 비판의 근본적 원인을 제공하였다. 그러나 그것이 바오로가 율법을 총체적으로 비판하였다거나 또는 율법과의 완전한 결별을 의미하는 것은 아니다. 오히려 바오로는 토라의 본질과 자신의 그리스도 체험을 동질적인 것으로 보면서 자신의 신학적 체계를 형성하였으며, 이는 그의 서간의 여러 부분에서 잘 드러난다.

영문 초록

Dedicating a special Jubilee Year to the St. Paul from 28 June 2008 to 29 June 2009 on the occasion of the bi-millennium of his birth, the Catholic Church is posing an old but still crucial question: “Who is Paul?” This article is trying to answer that question by means of casting a glance at the hermeneutic change of the Understandings about Paul and his theology from the 1st century through the times of Lutheran Reformation and the 2nd World War to modern times. But this article does not treat all the vast themes of Pauline theology. Concentrating on the relation between Paul and Judaism, it tries to show how Paul reached to get his self-consciousness between his dual identities as a Jew and a Christian. For this purpose, detached from the so-called “German Lutheran Reading”, this article tries to make a careful assessment of the “New Perspective on Paul”, which leads the trends after the monumental works of E.P. Sanders. In conclusion, it is proposed that Paul did not agree with the traditional Jewish frame of Torah, for he believed that his Christ-experience cannot be contained in that frame. As a result that caused his critics against “Law.” But it doesn’t mean that Paul reject Torah itself as a whole. He instead identified his Christ-experience with the substance of Torah and that became the ground on which he built his own theology for the coming era.
