바롬 고황경의 家系와 活動을 통한 여성교육의 재음미

국문 초록

바롬 고황경은 구한말 전통적 기독교적인 가정에서 태어나 학문을 수학한 이후 일제 강점기에 사회학자로서 경성자매원 운영과 나아가 서울여대 설립과 함께 생활교육(바롬교육)이란 독특한 건학이념으로 그의 이념과 교육철학을 구현시킨 인물이다. 본문은 머리말과 맺음말을 제외하고 세부분으로 구성되었다. 제1장 ‘시대적 배경과 기독교 전래 및 바롬 고황경의 家系’라 하여 구한말・일제강점기 시대적 배경과 기독교 전래 및 바롬 고황경의 친・외가의 가계와 가정 및 학교교육으로 나누어 보았다. 제2장에서는 ‘일제강점기 바롬 고황경의 유학생활과 경성자매원 설립’이라 하여 바롬 고황경의 일본과 미국 유학생활 수학과 일제강점기 경성자매원 설립과 바롬 고황경의 활동으로 살펴보았다. 그리고 제3장에서는 ‘광복 이후 바롬 고황경의 사회활동과 여성교육’이라 하여 교육행정가와 민간외교관으로서 사회활동과 1961년 서울여대 설립과 바롬 고황경박사의 ‘인성교육’으로 고찰하였다. 이를 통하여 바롬 고황경박사는 구한말 경건한 기독교적 가정환경과 유복한 환경에서 어린 시절 가정교육과 높은 학교교육 수학 및 대내외 활동을 통하여 치열하게 산 그의 삶을 재조명해 보았다. 기독교적 신앙바탕 위에 지도자 삶을 살았던 바롬 선생의 삶과 행적은 올곧이 서울여대의 건학이념이 되어 투영되었다고 할 수 있다. 또한 그 역할과 소임을 다한 삶이었다고 본다. 따라서 바롬 선생의 교육이념과 철학은 오늘날에도 전문성과 창의성 및 인성을 바탕으로 하는 서울여대 교육과 건학이념의 구현에 분명 큰 중심으로 자리하고 있다 할 것이다. 이제 격변하는 21세기 이르러는 시대와 대상이 달라졌다는 현실을 어떻게 적응하여 새롭게 재창조해 나갈 것이라는 숙제가 오늘 우리 모두의 과제가 아닐 수 없다. 구성원 전체가 서울여대 역사인 건학이념의 정체성과 동질성을 갖고 더불어 하나가되어 진지하게 고민하고 대안을 찾을 때 바롬 고황경 박사의 유업이 승화될 수 있다고 본다.

영문 초록

Bahrom Dr.Whang-Kyung Koh, a sociologist during the Japanese occupation period, who was born and educated in a traditional Christian family in the late period of Chosun Dynasty had her ideology and educational philosophy realized through operating Kyung Seong Ja Mae Won and establishing Seoul Women’s University with her special founding philosophy of practical education(as known as Bahrom Education). The text consists of three parts except the preface and the epilogue. The first chapter titled “historical background, the introduction of Christianity, and the family pedigree of Bahrom Dr. Whang-Kyung Koh” is divided into three: the historical background during the late period of Chosun Dynasty/Japanese occupation period, the introduction of Christianity, and family pedigree, family, and school education of Bahrom Dr. Whang-Kyung Koh. The second chapter, “Studying abroad and establishing Kyung Seong Ja Mae Won of Bahrom Dr. Whang-Kyung Koh during the Japanese occupation period”, deals with her studying abroad in U.S and Japan, establishing Kyung Seong Ja Mae Won, and her activities. In Chapter three, “Social Activities and Women Education of Bahrom Dr. Whang-Kyung Koh in post-independence of Korea”, moreover, I considered her social activities that she did as an education administrator and a citizen diplomat, foundation of Seoul Women’s University in 1961, and her “character education” ideology. I could understand that born in a devout Christian family background and lived in affluence even during the late period of Chosun Dynasty, she who had childhood upbringing and high levels of school education lived fiercely by doing domestic and foreign activities. Based on her faith in Christianity, we could evaluate that the life and the past she showed us as a leader were reflected perfectly on the founding philosophy of Seoul Women’s University. She, moreover, carried out her responsibilities and duties through her life. Today, therefore, her educational ideology and philosophy remain as central to realization of the education and founding ideology of Seoul Women’s University established based on professionalism, creativeness, and upright characters(personality). Now, in this 21stcentury, there is our new common task to reinvent the reality by adapting to the new era and changed objects today. I think if every member of Seoul Women’s University shares the identity of the founding philosophy as its history and works together by recovering the homogeneity to concern and find alternative solutions together, the business inherited by her could be improved.
