영어 비정형절의 분류체계

국문 초록

본 논문은 영어의 비정형절(non-finite clause)에 대한 전통문법의 접근방식에 어떤 문제점들이 있는지 논의한다. 국내에서 출판되는 대부분의 영문법 저서들은 전통문법의 접근방식을 따라 영어 비정형절을 부정사(infinitive), 동명사(gerund), 분사(participle)라는 세 범주로 분류한다. 이런 경향은 각 성분들이 문장에서 갖게 되는 기능의 측면에 근거한다. 반면에 미국이나 영국에서 출판되는 대다수의 저서들은 비정형절의 형태/범주에 초점을 두면서 infinitive clause, -ing clause, -ed clause로 분류하는 경향을 보여준다. 이 두 분류체계는 모두 논리적, 개념적인 문제들을 가지고 있다. 본 논문에서는 전통문법의 비정형절 분류체계에 어떤 문제들이 있는지 밝히고 그 문제들을 해결할 수 있는 대안을 제시한다.

영문 초록

This article deals with how the non-finite clauses in English are classified. Regarding the non-finite clauses in English, two different approaches are found in the traditional grammar. One is based upon the functions of the non-finite clauses and the other upon the forms/categories of them. These traditional approaches, however, reveal several logical and conceptual problems. With the function-based approach, a discrepancy is found between infinitive and gerund in that infinitive consists of three levels, whereas gerund consists of two levels. Another problem with the approach is concerned with the terminology. Here infinitive is a subcategory of the non-finite clause, which is conceptually problematic, given that both terms basically mean the same. This problem is found in the form-based approach, too. We propose an alternative approach to the non-finite clauses in English and provide solutions to the problems mentioned above. In our approach based purely on the functions of them, the non-finite clauses are classified into to-clause, -ing clause, and -ed clause.
