晉州道統祠의 출판 활동과 그 의의

국문 초록

일제-한말 시기 유교 지식인들은 어려운 시기를 타개하기 위해 다양한방식의 지적 활동을 전개하였다. 예컨대 대규모 지식인이 참여하여 각종 儒家書를 출간한 활동 등이 대표적이다. 이 시기 진주 도통사를 중심으로 江右지식인들이 행한 출판 활동 또한 이의 연장선상에 있었다. 당시 이들이 찾아낸 대안은 安珦이었다. ‘孔子-朱子-安珦’으로 이어지는 ‘유학 도통의 계보’를 확립하려 했던 것이다. 이를 위해 도통사를 창립하고孔子編年·朱子年譜·安子年譜 등을 출간했으며, 국내에서 이의 공신력을 확보하기 위해 중국 曲阜로 사람을 파견해 공자 후손에게서 서문을받았다. 그 과정에 수천 명의 유림이 참여하였고, 도통사는 이 일을 계기로 중국 孔敎會支部로서의 위상을 확보하였다. 이러한 일련의 활동은 오랜 기간 정치권에서 소외되었던 강우 지식인이 자신들의 지적 활동에 근원적 당위성을 확보하려는 당찬 기획이었고, 또한 그들이 만들어낸 새로운 기회였다. 이렇게 함으로써 자신들의 활동에 정당성과 신뢰를 부여하고, 나아가 국가적 어려움도 극복할 수 있다고 믿었던것이다. ‘유교’에 대한 당시의 인식은 경쟁시대에 적합하지 않고 신앙력이 없어 종교로서의 기능도 불가하며, 심지어 그런 유교 국가는 정치가 부패해져서 결국 자생하지 못할 것이라고도 하였다. 이러한 시대상황 속에서 이들은 궁극적으로 유학에로의 새로운 접근을 모색하지 않았고, 그렇다고 옛 것을 고수한 것만도 아니었다. 그들은 ‘공자-주자-안향’으로의 도통을 추구하여 유 학을 보위하고 나아가 자신들의 입지를 강화하면서도, 방법상에 있어서는 당시 국제질서의 변화 등을 외면하지 않으면서 문제 해결의 방안을 찾고자했던 것이다.

영문 초록

The Confucian intellectuals engaged in intellectual activities in various methods to pass through the difficult times at the end of Joseon and during the Japanese rule. One of good examples is the publication of all kinds of Confucian literary books in which a large number of intellectuals participated. On its extension line was the publishing activities of Gangwoo intellectuals around Dotongsa in Jinju those days. The alternative they found those days was Ahn Hyang. That is, they tried to establish the "continuous genealogy of Confucianism" from "Confucius through Zhu Xi to Ahn Hyang." Under the goal, they set up Dotongsa, published The Chronicle of Confucius, The Chronology of Zhu Xi, and The Chronology of Anja, and dispatched a man to Qufu, China to get a letter from the descendents of Confucius and thus earn public confidence in the nation. Thousands of Confucian scholars took part in the process, and Dotongsa expanded its scope even to China, thus obtaining the status of chapter of Gonggyohoi. A series of those activities represented an ambitious plan for the Gangwoo intellectuals, who were alienated by the political circles for many years, to secure fundamental legitimacy for their intellectual activities and also a new opportunity created by them. By doing so, they believed that they could grant legitimacy and reliability to their activities and further help the nation overcome the difficulties. Those days, people did not have favorable perceptions of "Confucianism," saying that it was not fit for the competitive age and could not function as a religion, having no religious power, and that a Confucian state would have corrupt politics and eventually fail to survive. In the situation of the times, they did not make an attempt at new approaches to Confucianism in the end and stick to only old things, either. In pursuit of continuity of "Confucius-Zhu Xi-Anja," they based their efforts on the fundamentalistic perspective of Confucianism and tried to search for plans to solve problems by embracing changes to the international order of the times in terms of method.
