양산 통도사의 출판활동과 그 의미

국문 초록

이 글은 通度寺의 인쇄․출판 활동과 그 의미를 살피는 것을 목적으로하고 있다. 영축총림 통도사는 자장율사께서 부처님 진신 사리를 모시고 開山한 이래 佛之宗刹의 면모를 갖추고 계율도량으로서 위상을 드날렸다. 특히, 고려 말 西天의 고승 指空의 방문을 통해 더욱 계율을 중시하는 사찰로서의 면모를 갖추게 된다. 임진왜란 이후에는 전쟁으로 피폐해진 사찰의 중건을 위해 友雲堂眞熙스님을 중심으로 경판을 판각하여 많은 전적들을 인쇄출판함으로써 위상회복과 지식 보급, 의식을 통한 대중의 위안 등에 힘썼다. 당시 이러한 개판작업은 상당한 수준이었으며 지역의 말사들과 함께 분담을 통한 체계적 구조를 갖추어 진행되었다. 특히 임란 이후부터 운흥사는 경판제작과 관련해 首사찰 역할을 하면서 통도사의 重建에 큰 역할을 하였다. 전적의 간행은 사찰의 역사를 정립하고 대중을 위한 불교의 역할을 우선으로 하였으며 근대에 들어와서는 다른 사찰보다 앞서 불교잡지인 『鷲山寶林』과 『潮音』을 발간하여 대중포교에 앞장섰다. 이러한 문화 활동은 왜색불교에 맞서고 시대에 뒤쳐지지 않으려는 통도사 스님들의 의지를 반영하는 결과물들이다. 이는 당시 스님들의 시대정신을 알 수 있는 중요한 단 서들이다. 통도사는 인쇄․출판 활동을 통해 문화활동과 포교활동을 동시에 행하였으며 이를 통해 지식의 보급은 물론 대중을 위로하고 소통하기 위해 끊임없이 노력하였다. 현재 전해지고 있는 이러한 노력의 결과물들은 당시의 정황을 짐작하는 중요한 자료로서 앞으로 더 세분화하여 심도 있는 연구가필요하다.

영문 초록

In Tongdosa, they secured legitimacy of Buddha's will by Jajangyulsa, the founder of a Buddhist temple and raised its status as religious precepts generosity by visiting of Jigong in late Koryo. And they restored each Royal Palace and published by woodblock printing under control of Buddhist Priest Wooundang Jinhee to recover the spirit that was devastated as much as abandoned temple's appearance after Imjin War. Unlike activity of Confucian scholar, main purpose of Woodblock printing in Buddhist communities was propagation of Buddism, the spread of knowledge by training Buddhist monk and comfort of public through the ritual. Tongdosa aimed for this ideal so they published by engraving Buddhist scriptures board actively and then formed Buddhist culture. Their level of woodblock printing was significant so they extended their presence to nearby temple or hermitage, and Kimcheon and worked with systematic organization by sharing duties. We need to study of UnHeungsa still more but at least we can confirm the fact that this temple was being as chief temple of branch temples of Tongdosa. Unlike other temples, they published the historical summary book or formulary intensively so established the history of temple and put the temples role for public ahead of everything. In modern times, they made the effort to keep from being left behind current event by fighting back against foreign Buddism through cultural activity as publishing magazine for public propagation. Although a short period publication, they suggested new way for public propagation by 'Chisanborim' and 'Joeum' and we can guess how clear was the awareness of state of a period of Tongdosa Buddhist Priests. Like this, the publication activity of Tongdosa has significance for the cultural activity or the propagation. From now on, we do an in-depth study of these results and extend the scope of the study from the part to the whole. This article is the beginning of this work, so we will make a more clear point by untiring research.
