『토지』에 나타난 여담의 수사학

국문 초록

이 글은 박경리 『토지』의 독특한 서사구조를 여담이라는 문학적 기법을 중심으로 재해석하는 데 그 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 두 개의 서와 곁텍스트, 이음매와 인물의 기능, 여담의 삽입양상과 서사구조의 관련양상을 살펴보았다. 『토지』는 여담적 텍스트를 포함한 소설 중 극한에 놓이는 작품으로서 전반적으로 반여담적 서술전략을 보인다. 완결본에 삽입된 곁텍스트는 여담적 단장에 대한 자각을 엿보게 하며, 장제목 중 일부는 여담적 단장의 삽입을 예고하고 부각시킨다. 완간 이후 독립된 4부의 서는 후반부로 갈수록 여담의 경계가 더욱 부각되고 서사적 맥락에 대한 간섭과 영향력이 더욱 커지게 되었음을 반영한 것이라 할 수 있다. 여담을 플롯의 차원에서 봉합하기 위한 여러 가지 기법이 동원되고 있는데, 그 대표적인 것으로 정보전달 기능과 주제전달 기능을 맡은 인물을 들 수 있다. 역사적 사실을 후경화시키고 인물의 행동을 삭제하는 『토지』의 전형적인 역사 서술방식은 이러한 인물의 기능적 활용과 관련되어 있다. 후반부에는 주제전달을 위해 덩어리로 삽입되는 논설적 여담이 늘어나고 잦아져 전 후반의서사구조를 다른 것으로 판단하게 하는 원인이 된다. 『토지』는 확산과 응집의 두 힘이 작용하면서 결국에는 개방적인 결말과 서사적 종결을 함께 보여주었다. 여담은 확산의 힘과 응집의 힘이 함께 작용하면서 생겨난 균열, 처음부터 치밀하게 기획된 독특한 서사전략이 연재가 진행되면서 전체의 길이와 확산을 감당하지 못한 결과로 자연스럽게 나타난 특성이라 할 수 있다. 이것은 내포작가의 차원에서 인물의 공평한 창조와 형상화 원리에 의한 확장(생태학적 자아의 서술)과 서사의 통제와 주제 심화의 필요(서사적 자아의 서술)라는 양극의 균열과도 긴밀히 연결되어 있다. 요컨대 『토지』에 삽입된 여담의 역설과 모순적인 면은 결국 『토지』의 분산과 응집, 개방과 폐쇄의 서사를 떠받치는 원리로 작용하며 『토지』의 독특한장르적 특성을 낳았다고 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

This study is aimed at re—interpret the unique narrative structure of Toji, a novel by Park, Kyong—ni, with focus on the literary technique called digression. To accomplish the objective, the following aspects of the novel are explored: the paratext and two prefaces in Part Ⅰ and Ⅳ; the transition connecting digression; functional characters, insertion aspects of digressions and related aspect of a narrative structure. Toji shows anti—digressive strategy of narration in general as a work which is placed in extremes among the novels including digressive digressive passages like In Search of Lost Time by Marcel Proust. The paratexts inserted in the completed version(1994) reveal that the author, or an editor was cognizant of digressive passages. Some of the chapter titles suggest that digressive passages will be introduced, which are highlighted in detail. After the completion, the preface in Part Ⅳ were separated from chapter 1 of Part Ⅳ, which reflects the following. First, the digression boundaries became clearer in the latter half part. Second, the digression had a greater impact on the narrative context. The author of Toji mobilized various techniques to stitch up the digressions at a level of plot. As its representative example, cited can be the functional characters in charge of the function of information delivery and subject delivery. The typical narrative method of history manifested in Toji, in which historical facts are placed in the background, and the character’s action is not put into the scene at a historical site, has something to do with the functional use of such a character. In the latter half of this work, editorial digressions, which are inserted in the lump for subject delivery, increase and become frequent, causing the readers to judge that the narrative structure of the first half and latter half is different. Toji finally showed the open ending and narrative denouement together as the two forces of diffusion and cohesion work. Digression, as an elaborately planned unique narrative strategy from the beginning, can be said to be a naturally appearing characteristic as a result of the failure to bear the whole length and diffusion with the rupture and publication in a series, which come into existence through the co—working of the strength of diffusion and cohesion, progressing. Such a characteristic is also closely connected with the bipolar rupture of equitable creation of characters, expansion based on the embodiment principle(ecological self narrative), control of a narrative, and necessity of subject deepening(narrative self description) In short, it might be safe to say that the paradoxical and contradictory aspects of digressions in Toji, closely correspond to the principle, which is supporting Toji—employed diffusion & cohesion, and openness and shutdown, and give rise to the unique genre characteristic of Toji.
