염상섭 장편소설 『사랑과 죄』에 나타난 범죄의 지리

국문 초록

이 글은 염상섭의 장편소설 『사랑과 죄』에서 범죄의 서사를 문학지리적인방법으로 분석했다. 다시 말해 『사랑과 죄』에서 도시공간의 지리적 조건이 범죄의 서사에 미친 영향을 검토했다. 염상섭의 소설에서 공간은 단순히 사건이 일어나고 있는 배경에 그치지 않고, 플롯과 서사의 심층적인 층위에 연결되어 있다. 따라서 염상섭 소설에서 공간의 기능과 역할을 분석하는 것은, 단순히 장소와 연관된 역사적 사실을 확인하는 것을 넘어, 지리적인 환경이 어떻게 소설의 서사에 영향을 미치고있는지에 대한 탐구로 이어진다. 우선 살인사건이 일어난 사초전골의 마약굴이 도심부에 위치한 설정의 의미를 분석했다. 이 마약굴은 경성의 주요 시가지 개발에서 소외된 지역에 위치한다. 염상섭은 이러한 공간 속에 구한말에 몰락한 인물들을 배치시켰다. 이에 따라 도시계획에 의해 소외된 낙후지역은 식민지화에 따라 몰락한 ‘전근대’의 인물과 대응하게 되었다. 염상섭은 이러한 설정을 통해 공간을 역사적인 기호로 드러냈다. 다음으로 살인자인 정마리아가 해줏집을 찾기 위해 헤매는 과정을 도시공간의 복잡성과 연관시켜 분석했다. 해줏집을 찾는 과정에서 복잡한 지리는 대상의 탐색을 어렵게 만드는 역할을 했다. 정마리아의 범죄는 영민한 추리력과 비상한 행동력, 적절한 임기응변이 어우러진 결과였는데, 이는 모두 도시공간이라는 장애물을 극복하기 위한 노력이라 할 수 있다. 복잡한 지리적 환경은 인물의 다양한 행동을 유발했으며, 이것은 범죄의 서사를 흥미진진하게 만드는 원인이 되었다. 이렇듯 사랑과 죄에서 도시의 환경은 범죄의 서사를 추동하는 결정적인 계기로 기능했다.

영문 초록

This paper aims to revisit Yeom, Sang—seob's novel Love and Sin within the framework of literary geography. In detail, a sequence of crime act is analyzed along with geographical conditions of urban space represented in the novel. In Yeom's work, space is not only settings where events occur, but also decisive elements presenting depth of narratives. Therefore, analyzing functions and roles of spatial data in his novel leads us to understand how geographical surroundings affect on plots of novels. Firstly, this paper focuses on the Sachojeongol, the place of murder. It is near the center of Kyungsung. It places on the old town where is surrounded by new downtowns. The dwellers are characterized as the fallen who was once had their golden time in old era. This setting shows that how spatial surface can be read as the sign of history. In sequence, process of finding Sachojeongol is also a clue that showing relations between geographical setting and plots. The murderer, Maria wanders around Sachojeongol because she does not know where the victim lives. In this scene, urban complexity makes Jung's searching difficult. It can be understood that the maze of city take a role of crucial obstacle. In result, the murderer should use every possible skims she has. A intelligent reasoning, extraordinary mobility, and adaptation to circumstances are her strengths. In this sequence, urban complexity makes murderers as an sort of 'activist', and it makes the narrative of crime more adventurous.
