박화성 여행소설의 은유와 환유

국문 초록

본고에서는 박화성의 여행소설 『두 승객과 가방』(1933,『조선문학』), 『고향없는 사람들』 (1936, 『신동아』), 신혼여행』 (1934, 『조선일보』)을 중심으로 여행소설에서 나타나는 은유와 환유를 연구하였다. 특히 여행소설 중 신혼여행 은 ‘정착－떠남－정착’ 혹은 ‘안주－여행－안주’ 플롯인 원점회귀의 순환구조가 아니라 ‘귀환하지 않는 여행’으로서 여행자가 정착지를 적극적으로 선택할수 있는 가능성을 보여준다. 박화성의 여행소설에서 나타나는 은유는 착취의 은유로서 ‘응시하는 주체’가 있기에 가능하다. 침략/수탈의 근대성을 보여주는 기차의 은유는 제국주의의 현실을 보여준다. 그러나 기차 여행에서 바라보는 풍경은 미적 거리를 둔 ‘응시하는 주체’의 은유로서 현실에 구체적으로 참여하는 모습을 보여주지 못한다. 따라서 ‘참여하는 주체’의 정치성을 위해서는 환유로까지 나아갈 필요성이있다. 이 작품에서 나타나는 환유는 삶의 구체적인 현장을 보여주면서 여성인물인 복주를 ‘참여하는 주체’로 변화하게 하는 기제가 된다. 이 과정에서 주체의 행위와 감정이 변하면서 여행은 현실과 관련된 학교로 기능하며, 학교의 환유를 보여준다. 복주는 남편에게 종속되는 아내가 아니라 민중을 구제하기위한 사업에 함께 참여하는 동지(동반자)가 되는 것이다. 이는 ‘여행자’가 밖에서 바라보는 자, 거리를 두는 자가 아니라 안에서 함께 하는 자, 거리를 좁히는 자가 된다는 것을 보여준다. 이렇게 민중 지향과 민중 연대의 특성을 보여주면서 새로운 출발을 하는 모습은 자아와 세계의 확장을 보여주며, 특히 이러한 과정이 여성 인물에게서 나타난다는 점에서 주체적인 여성의 모습을 드러낸다. 이는 남성에게 종속된 가부장 담론이 아니라 여성이 능동적이고 주체적으로 행위하는 페미니즘 담론과 연결될 가능성을 지닌다.

영문 초록

This study analyzes the metaphors and metonymies of Park, Hwa－sung's travel novels, The Two Travelers and a Bag(1933, Chosun Literature), The People without a Hometown(1936, ShinDongA), Honeymoon(1934, Chosun Media). In particular, Honeymoon is not structured by a circulating structure of returning to the starting point like ‘settlement－departure－settlement’ or ‘satisfaction－travel－satisfaction’ plots, but the main character independently selects the destiny as a ‘a journey without a return.’ In terms of metaphors in Park, Hwa－sung's travel novels, it is metaphors of exploitation established by a ‘gazing subject’ in the story. The metaphors of a train show the modernity with invasion/exploitation, thereby, the reality of imperialism. However, the scenery from travelling in a train is a metaphor of a 'gazing subject' in a close proximity that does not practically show the details of the character participation. Therefore, it is necessary to explore the metonymies for the political nature of a ‘participatory subject.’ The metonymies in this novel show the details of the background and depict Bokju changing to a 'participatory subject.' In this process, the behaviors and emotions of the character change, therefore, the journey functions as a school in the reality in addition revealing the metonymies of schools. Bokju does not stay as a wife, who is subordinate to his husband, but rather become a comrade (companion) to help the people by participating in the movements. This shows a process of a person becoming a part of the inner society and shortening the distance from others rather than staying as a 'traveler,' who observes from outside at a distance from others. By depicting the people's orientation and characteristics of solidarity, this novel shows the expansions of one's self and world while starting a new beginning. This novel articulates a proactive female figure with a female character. This is not a discourse of subordinating patriarchal tendencies among men, but rather it is more likely to relate to a proactive woman and her subjective behaviors in terms of a feminist discussion.
