줄당기기의 여가문화적 특성연구

국문 초록

우리나라 곳곳에서는 지금도 한국의 전통민속놀이의 하나인 줄당기기가 행해지고 있다. 원래 이 줄당기기는 農耕時代에 생산력을 가진 사람들에 의해 행해진 촌락공동체의 의례적 연중행사의 하나로 농사의 풍년을 기원하고 동내 안녕을 기원하기 위한 것이었다. 이때 사용되는 줄은 龍蛇의 상징물로 인식되었다. 용사는 물을 지배하는 水神이므로 줄당기기를 통해 용을 섬기고 자극하면 그것이 농사에 영향을 미쳐 풍요를 가져다 줄 것으로 믿었기 때문이다. 그리고 줄당기기의 과정은 줄의 결합과 분리가 반복해서 일어나고, 전투적 분위기의 싸움은 나쁜 운을 물리치거나 방지하기 위한 싸움으로 사람들이 이해하면서 마을의 평안을 기대하였다. 줄당기기는 이러한 종교적인 믿음도 있지만, 특히 우리가 주목하는 것은 그것이 가진 여가 문화적 특성이다. 줄당기기의 현장은 축제장이고 이 축제장에서는 비일상적인 시공간이 형성되어 신명성과 해방감이 한껏 발휘된다. 그리고 거기에는 우리의 소리와 춤도 한껏 어울려진 문화적, 연극적 요소도 갖추어 져 있어 한국 전통문화의 한 자산이자 전통예술의 근간이라 할 수 있다. 본 연구는 이 점에 주목해서 줄당기기 구경꾼들이 줄당기기에 담긴 주술종교적인 기제와 여가 문화적인 특성을 어떻게 인식하고 있으며, 또 그러한 특성을 나타내는 여러 기호들에 대한 평가는 어떠한지를 조사, 분석하였다. 조사결과 구경꾼들은 연령에 구분 없이 줄당기기에서 주술종교적인 기제보다는 여가문화적인 의미를 더 중시하고 있음이 밝혀졌다. 이것은 줄당기기에 놀이적 요소가 주가 됨으로써 줄당기기 현장은 여가문화의 현장이 되고 있음을 시사해 주고 있다. 그리고 30대 이상의 관람자들은 재관람의도와 타인관람추천의도도 많으며, 특히 과거 관람경험자들은 무경험자들보다 줄당기기 과정에서 주고받는 언사와 肉談, 呪術的 行爲를 더 주목한 것으로 조사된 것은 시사점이 크다. 따라서 줄당기기의 연행구조와 전개과정을 관람객들이 미리 이해할 수 있는 방법을 찾고 또 그것을 지역축제화하거나 민속관광지에서 상설로 연행하는 방안도 모색할 필요가 있다.

영문 초록

Juldanggigi, one of Korean traditional folk plays, has still been prevalent across the nation. This folk play that refers to a tug-of-war had initially been conducted in the Agricultural Age by farmers as one of annual formal events to pray for a good harvest and the peace of a village community. The rope used in Juldanggigi was viewed as a symbol of a dragon and a snake. As a dragon was a water god that dominates water, they believed worshipping and stimulating a dragon would bring them a year of abundance. There was a series of repeated union and separation during that process, and they conducted it in anticipation of peace, regarding the combatant fighting as what made it possible to avoid or prevent a bad luck. Juldanggigi was widespread as what concerned religious faith, but the focus of the study was placed on the features of it as part of leisure culture. The place where it s done is a place for a festival. At this place, people can get excited and unleash their oppressed emotions in an unusual way. At the same time, this folk play accompanied by music and dance is part of cultural heritage and the basis of traditional art that is marked by both cultural and theatrical components. The purpose of this study was to delve into the perception of viewers about Juldanggigi that was religious and part of leisure culture. And it s also meant to examine how they evaluated the different symbols of it in an attempt to pave the way for making it function as one of great Korean cultural and tourism resources. The findings of the study were as follows: Unlike the past, the spectators investigated attached more importance to Juldanggigi as leisure culture rather than as a religious event. That indicated that it was largely looked upon as a play, and that it eventually served as a chance to let people enjoy leisure culture. The respondents who were in their 30s and up had a lot of intention to see it again or to advise others to view it. One notable thing here was that the spectators who had ever gone sightseeing paid more attention than the others who hadn t to what people playing it talk to one another, their vulgar talks or incantatory behaviors, which seemed to have lots of implications. In the future, how to let spectators understand in advance the structure and procedure of Juldanggigi and how to perform it on a regular basis as an event of local festival or at a folklore tourist attraction.
