스튜디오 장신구 운동에 관한 연구

국문 초록

20세기 초 미국 사회는 급속한 산업화로 인하여 여러 가지 사회문제가 강력하게 대두되었다. 이러한 사회적, 정치적 그리고 경제적 불안감을 해소시키기 위하여 예술가들은 다양한 표현 방법을 모색하였는데 그 중의 하나가 생산노동의 가치를 새롭게 인식하는 수공예 제작 방법의 사용이다. 이들은 수공예 작업을 통하여 공장에서 이루어지고 있는 비인간적인 노동으로부터 탈출할 수 있다고 생각하였으며 건강한 작업 환경 속에서 경제적 안락을 가져올 수 있고 또한 아름다운 물건을 만듦으로서 노동의 즐거움을 재발견할 수 있다고 생각하였다. 20세기 중반 이러한 공예운동에 참여한 도자, 유리, 목공예, 금속 등의 스튜디오 작가들은 미국의 미술관과 박물관의 지원으로 많은 전시에 참여하게 되었으며 스튜디오 장신구 운동 역시 이러한 미국 공예운동의 일환의 하나로 생겨났다. 스튜디오 장신구 운동에 참여한 작가들 역시 공장에서 대량생산 되는 산업 장신구와는 구별되는 수공예를 바탕으로 한 장신구를 제작하였다. 이들은 작가의 의식과 개성의 표현을 중요하게 생각하였으며 장신구를 예술 표현의 한 방법으로 인식하여 세상에 단 하나뿐인 장신구를 제작하였다. 이들의 장신구는 20세기이후 나타나기 시작한 예술 장신구의 시발점이 되었으며 이러한 스튜디오 장신구 작가들의 정신과 작업방식은 현재까지 이어져오며 현대 예술 장신구에 큰 영향을 미치고 있다. 이 논문은 현대 예술 장신구의 출발점이 된 스튜디오 장신구에 대한 연구로 미국을 중심으로 한 스튜디오 운동의 발생 배경과 특징에 대해서 알아보고 20세기 초 대표적인 스튜디오 장신구 작가의 작품을 중심으로 스튜디오 장신구에 대해서 연구하였으며 이를 통하여 예술 장신구에 대한 이해를 높이고자 하였다.

영문 초록

At the beginning of the 20th century, many serious social issues came to the forefront in the United States due to the rapid industrialization. Artists sought various ways of expression to relieve social, political and financial anxieties, and one of them was handicraft which made people consider the value of production labor from a different perspective. They thought they could be free from inhumane labor practices in factories through handicrafts, escape from financial difficulties while working in a healthy working environment and rediscover the joy of labor by making beautiful things. Studio jeweler made jewelry with their hands, which differentiated them from mass-produced industrial jewelry that were produced in factories, owing to the revival of such artistic handicrafts. They refused to use machine and mass-production, and started to make one-of-a kind jewelry with hammers and rivets. Craftsmen valued artistic sense and the expression of personality, and recognized accessories as a way of expressing artistic ideas. Also, they produced a limited amount of jewelry with materials they have selected. The jewelry made in studios became the origin of artistic jewelry which have appeared since the 20th century. Moreover, the spirit and working methods of those artists who made jewelry in studios still prevail at present and have been substantially affecting modern artistic jewelry. This paper aims to have a deeper understanding of art jewelry while studying the studio jewelry in the United States which became the starting point of modern art jewelry. It also investigated the characteristics and background of occurrence of the studio movement and studied the work of craftsmen who represent studio jewelry in the beginning of the 20th century.
