국문 초록

미술의 형식은 시대의 변화에 따라 새로운 사고와 표현들을 모색하며 확장되고 있다. 또한 현대 사회의 기술의 발전이 가져온 개인화와 정신적 위기로 인해 예술의 사회적 역할과 기능도 광범위해지고 있다. 이러한 사회적 요구에 의해 파생된 커뮤니티아트는 관객 참여 방식의 표현법을 적극적으로 수용한 미술 분야이다. 그리고 이러한 특성은 미술적 표현을 통해 동시대적 패러다임을 보여줌과 동시에 관객의 사고와 공동체의 변화에 영향을 주는 사회적 기능을 수행 가능하게 하고 있다. 본 연구에서는 커뮤니티아트의 특성을 분류하고 연구하여 시대의 변화에 따른 미술의 사회적 기능에 대한 가능성과 효율성에 대하여 알아보고자 한다. 그러기 위해 커뮤니티 아트의 특징이자 중요 표현 수단인 '관객의 참여에 의한 의식의 공유'와, '장소성'에 대한 정의와 특성에 대하여 알아보았다. 또한 관객들에게 공예의 가치에 대한 이해와 공동체의 의식 변화를 요구하는 클레어 투미의 작품들을 사례작품들로 선정하였다. 작품들은 지역중심의 소통적 표현들과 의식공유를 위한 매개체로 분류 하였고, 커뮤니티아트의 특성들과 비교하여 분석하였다. 클레어 투미의 작품들에 적용된 표현들을 통해 커뮤니티아트의 참여에 의한 진행과정이 작가의 개인적인 관심으로서의 표현영역을 벗어나, 사회구성원들의 삶에 대한 공적 관심과 문제들에 대한 치유와 회복에 효과적인 표현법이라는 것을 살펴볼 수 있다. 연구를 통하여 대중과 미술 작품의 교류로 인해 파생될 수 있는 사회적 변화의 가능성이 확장되기를 기대해본다.

영문 초록

Throughout history, a form of arts has expanded according to the different zeitgeist and expressional methods. Furthermore, as the modern rapid technological development resulted deep individualization and various individual mental crisis, the social role and the function of art were broadening. Community art has emerged from these social demands, and it has become a field that actively promotes viewer participation as a form of artistic expression. These characteristics of community art presented the contemporary paradigm of art, as well as, performed a social function by triggering a change in the viewer's and the community's perspective. The present study categorized and analyzed the characteristics of community art to seek for the possibilities of art serving a social function and their effectiveness. In that, the present study looked into the definitions and the properties of its main characteristics and expressional methods; which were the concept of 'forming a collective consciousness through viewers' participation' and 'spatiality'. Moreover, this research selected the works of Clare Twomey, which displays the value of crafts and aims for a change in community consciousness. Her works were categorized into regional-specific communicative works and those functioning as a channel for collective consciousness, and these works were further analyzed in comparison to the characteristics of community art. Through this research, the present study aimed to expand the possibility of social change resulting from the interaction between viewers and art works.
