국문 초록

동아시아 도자기는 16세기 경부터 네덜란드 동인도회사 등의 무역을 통해 유럽의 왕실, 귀족 등에게 보급되었고 이 때문에 19세기 동아시아 미술품 애호가들 사이에서 가장 주목받는 장르가 되었다. 동아시아 미술품은 산업혁명 이후 대두된 미술공예운동 등의 영향으로 더욱 공예적 우수성을 인정받고 있었다. 미국 남북전쟁과 산업혁명의 성공으로 엄청난 부를 축적한 미국의 부호들은 19세기 말 20세기 초 유럽의 명화, 장식미술품을 집중적을 구입하고 이 과정에서 공예품의 최상위로 꼽히는 중국의 앤틱 도자기와 한국의 고려청자 등을 확보하였다. 이 과정에서 주목할 만한 요인은 1894-95년 발생한 제1차 청일전쟁에서 승리를 확보한 일본 덕분에 야마나카 상회같은 고미술품 전문 거래상이 뉴욕, 파리 등지로 진출한 점과 유태인 출신의 미술거래상인 헨리 두빈(1854-1919)과 조셉 두빈(1869-1939)이 고가의 아시아 도자기들을 집중적으로 판매한 점이다. 유럽미술품과 동아시아 도자기를 함께 수집하는 컬렉터들은 존 피어폰트 모건(1837-1913), 벤자민 아트만(1840-1913), 이사벨라 스튜어트 가드너(1840-1924) 등이 있었고간혹 아시아 미술품 만을 중점적으로 구입하는 존 디 록커펠러 주니어(1874-1960) 혹은 찰스 랑 프리어(1854-1919) 등의 애호가도 있었다. 공예품 중심으로 시작된 동아시아 미술 컬렉터들은 이차세계대전 즈음부터 아시아미술 전문 큐레이터 혹은 학자들의 도움으로 서예와 회화같은 미술비평, 고전지식, 까다로운 감식안 등이 많이 요구되는 장르로 진출하게 된다. 하지만 1차 세계대전 이전의 동아시아 미술품 수집은 화려함과 기법의 우수함이 독보적인 중국의 명청 도자기 및 한국의 고려청자 등에 집중되어 있었다. 이러한 수집의 전통이 현대미술계에서 동아시아 작가의 입지 및 성장에 꾸준한 영향을 미치고 있으며 아시아 출신 현대공예미술작가들의 작품경향에도 생각거리를 던져준다.

영문 초록

Among many craft genres in Asian art, porcelain making has been the most admired throughout centuries all over the globe. Two exhibitions held in 2015, Made in the Americas: The New World Discovers Asia at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and Asia-Amsterdam, Luxury in the Golden Age at the Rijks Museum, Amsterdam, unequivocally document other worlds' fascination with Asian porcelain. Made in the Americas features a number of art objects inspired by Asian crafts arriving from the seventeenth to the early nineteenth centuries. This essay aims to document the collecting history of East Asian porcelain by major connoisseurs in North America from the 1880s to the 1930s. Starting with a survey of export porcelain made in China and Japan, the reception of Asian fine porcelain in Europe and North America is explained in the context of luxury trade conducted by the Dutch East India Company and the Portuguese mercantile ships. What follows is a summary of the historical perception of Asian porcelain by collectors and connoisseurs in the age of World Expositions in the second half of the nineteenth century. A crucial period for major collectors of Asian porcelain, the paper argues, coincided with the Sino-Japanese War and the subsequent years when influential dealers such as Yamanaka, the Duveens, C. T. Loo, and the like were actively competing with one another for collectors of magnificent wealth. This overview could, in turn, implicate a limitation as well as potential application for the current porcelain creators in relation to contemporary art practices. In the age of mechanical reproduction and 3D printing, such a painstaking collaboration would be reassuring. The practice of fabrication and collaboration, commonly acknowledged in contemporary art in recent years, may contribute to a greater partnership between porcelain artists and installation/conceptual artists. New collectors of Asian art should emerge in order to support Asian craft artists in the long history of admiration for fine luxury from Asia.
