This study aims to explore how elementary school teachers perceive teacher as researcher and action research. The participants were 21 elementary English teachers who were taking a graduate course action research for elementary English teachers. At the beginning of the course, questionnaires were administered with regard to the role of teacher as researcher and its advantages and potential problems. In addition, at the end of the semester after they had finished doing action research for a course requirement, written interviews were done through e-mail with respect to their action research experiences. Major findings from the analysis of this survey are three-fold. First, all the teachers considered that the role of teacher as researcher is needed to improve the quality of teaching and learning processes and to reduce the gap between practice and theory. It was also mentioned that, although there are many advantages of teacher doing research, there are potential ethical and practical problems such as students' right and having balance between teaching and researching. Second, the teachers believed that the experience of doing action research has helped them have a deeper understanding of their students and extend their teaching knowledge and skills. Third, it was said that they had difficulties doing action research due to the lack of time, research skills, and support of their colleagues. Based on these results several suggestions for teachers to be able to utilize action research for their professional development are made.
