영문 초록

The present study aims to examine the effects of vocabulary teaching based on the lexical approach on Korean primary school students' English vocabulary use and application in contextualized situations. For this purpose, 104 students in 4th grade participated in the study during the course of their regular English lessons twice a week for ten weeks. Two classes were taught using lexical approach activities, and two were taught with an emphasis on single word meaning. The results of the study showed that on the short-term test administered at tenth week, there was no significant difference between the two groups regarding vocabulary ability. However, the delayed test conducted at week five after the post-test showed a statistically significant difference between the groups with the students being taught using the lexical approach remembering more of the words and using them appropriately. This results suggest that teaching English vocabulary using the lexical approach is an effective way to build long-term memory and enable students to use words appropriately in any given situation.
