壺谷流放詩之文學治療功能探究

국문 초록

본 논문에서는 壺谷南龍翼(1628∼1692)의 유배시를 문학치료적 관점으로 고찰하면서 척박한 불모의 땅인 유배지에서 창작한 그의 유배시가 어떠한 과정을 거치면서 정서적 안정과 회복의 단계로 도달하게 되는가 하는 것을 논점으로 연구를 진행하였다. 호곡 남용익은 조선 숙종조에 대제학·이조판서 등의 벼슬을 한 문신이다. 호곡은『壺谷集』·『壺谷詩話』·『箕雅』등의 저술을 남겼으며 作詩·評詩·選詩 방면에 두루 업적을 남긴 인물로 문학사에 널리 이름이 알려져 있다. 그는 당쟁이 극심하던 시절 정치적 난국 속에서 결국 유배생활을 하게 되었다.『호곡집』에 수록된 유배시를 보면 그가 유배지에서의 고뇌와 고통, 현실 수용과 초월의 과정을 시로 형상화하면서 심리적 외상을 점차 극복해가며 정서적 안정을 회복하고 있는 면모가 유배시에 용해되어 있음을 파악할 수 있다. 호곡의 유배시에서 문학치유적 표현 양상의 특성을 보면 첫째, 젊은 시절의 使行길과 노년의 流配길에 대한 대비를 통해 유배에서 겪는 내면의 상처를 더욱 효과적으로 표출하였다. 둘째, 자연물에 의지한 감정이입의 방법을 통해서 고충을 더욱 현실감 있게 토로하였다. 셋째, 유배생활을 하면서도 오히려 충신연주지사적 표현을 통해 정신적 안정을 회복하면서 문학적 치유를 도모하고 있었다. 이는 다양한 작시방법을 통한 창작치료의 과정이라 생각하며, 문학치료적 측면에 볼 때 작가 스스로 택한 시 창작이라는 방편이 심리적 외상 치유에 있어서 그 효용가치가 매우 크다는 것을 시사하는 것이라 생각한다. 문학치료학이라는 학문이 한국에 도입되어 본격적 연구가 진행된 것은 그리 역사가 길지 않다. 더구나 고전문학 연구에 원용되어 연구방법론의 하나로 정착되고 학문적 성과를 이루고 있는 것도 타 분야에 비해 아직은 활발하지 않은 실정이므로 보다 심도 있는 연구성과물이 축적되기를 기대한다.

영문 초록

This study examines a controversial point that the exile literature of Hogok Namyongik (1628∼1692) acts as literary therapy. Namyongik’s writings from the barren soil of exile show the process of regaining emotional stability and rehabilitation. Hogok Namyongik served as a high level civilian government official and Minster of Interior (DaeJeHak & EeJoPanSeo) in the Joseon Dynasty Sukjong Era. Namyongik left behind writings such as “Hogokjip”,“Hogoksihwa”, and “Gia”. In the history of literature he was known for his work in versification, peacetime and mercy. In the midst of political faction impasse, he lost his public post then started a life of exile. The exile literature included in the “Hogokjip” could be said to embody anguish, suffering, and acceptance of current reality. It chronicles the process of transcendence in a place of exile and the aspect of regaining emotional stability by overcoming post-traumatic stress disorder. Focusing on Namyongik’s literature as a greater form of healing, he described conflicted reality highlighting mental anguish and psychological trauma; rather than reveal his seriously wounded heart, Namyongik went through the process of healing by making an attempt at mental stability through transcendent thinking. In the former, if expressed distress is considered a passive attempt in the healing process then the latter form of writing can be called proactive healing which is achieved through transcendence and sublimation. Characteristics of literary therapy in Namyongik’s exile literature are revealed as first his wounded heart was effectively expressed in a contrast between his youth as an envoy and his elder years as an exile. Second, through his empathy with natural objects, he realistically expressed his difficulties. Third, even though Namyongik lived in exile, he promoted literary therapy through his continued loyalty, love, and respect to his king. When seen in terms of therapeutic literature, it is considered the process of creative healing by various means of writing poems. Namyongik found that writing poems himself was an effective method of healing psychological trauma. Studying literary therapy in Korea does not have a long history. Moreover, compared to other fields of study, it still hasn’t been fixated as a methodology which quotes articles in classical literature. Therefore, in the future, the field is expected to grow as researchers produce more in-depth results.
