노년기 자원봉사활동과 자아존중감

국문 초록

본 연구는 자원봉사활동에의 참여가 노인들의 자아존중감에 미치는 영향을 살펴보고, 자원봉사활동으로부터 얻는 보상과 자원봉사활동에 대한 가족의 지지가 자원봉사 참여 노인들의 자아존중감에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지 파악하고자 하는 목적에서 수행되었다. 이를 위하여 서울 및 근교를 대상으로 하여 자원봉사활동에 참여하는 노인 152명, 참여하지 않는 노인 143명의 자료를 수집하여 분석에 사용하였다. 연구결과, 자원봉사활동 참여집단 노인들이 비참여집단 노인들보다 자아존중감 수준이 높았으며, 이러한 차이는 연령, 교육수준, 경제상태 및 건강 등의 사회인구학적 변수들의 영향력이 통제된 후에도 유의하였다. 자원봉사활동에 참여하는 노인들은 자원봉사활동 보상과 가족 지지를 상당히 높게 지각하고 있었으며, 자원봉사활동에서 보상을 높게 지각할수록 자아존중감 수준이 증가하는 것으로 나타났다. 한편 가족 지지는 자아존중감에 영향을 미치지 않는 것으로 나타났다.

영문 초록

There has been recent increase of the participation in volunteering activities of the elders in Korea. However, little empirical studies were done to examine the relationship between the volunteering and the psychological well-being of the elderly. The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of the participation in volunteering activities on the self-esteem of the elders. Main research questions of the study were : 1) Do the participation in volunteering affect the level of self-esteem of elders? 2) What are the perceived rewards of the volunteering and how supportive are the family members for the elder's participation? 3) Do the perceived rewards and family support affect the level of self-esteem of the volunteering elders? In order to explore these questions, data were gathered from 152 elderly volunteers and 143 non-volunteers in Korea, through the structured questionnaire. The statistical methods used for the data analysis were descriptive statistics, t-test, and multiple regression. Results showed that participation in the volunteering activities was a significant variable predicting the level of self-esteem. The overall levels of the perceived rewards of volunteering and the family support were above the median levels. Perceived rewards of volunteering has a significant positive effect on the self-esteem of the elders while family support showed no significant effect. The results confirm the notion that participation in volunteering activities is one of the ways to the successful aging.
