자녀와의 동ㆍ별거가 농촌노인의 심리적 복지감에 미치는 영향

국문 초록

이 연구에서는 농촌노인의 거주형태가 심리적 복지감에 미치는 영향을 탐색하고, 거주형태가 심리적 복지에 미치는 영향이 노인의 결혼상태와 건강상태에 따라 차이가 나는가를 살펴보고자 하였다. 이를 위해 제주도를 제외한 전국 8개도 32마을에서 생존자녀가 적어도 한 명 이상 있는 만 60세 이상의 농촌노인 940명을 대상으로 자료를 수집하였다. 자녀와의 동ㆍ별거가 노인의 행복감과 고독감에 미치는 영향 정도를 위계적 희귀분석을 통해 살펴본 결과, 자녀와의 동거는 노인의 행복감에 통계적으로 유의미한 정적인 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났으나, 다른 사회경제적 변수들의 영향력을 고려하자 유의미한 영향력이 사라졌으며, 결혼상태와 건강상태 변수와의 상호작용 효과도 나타나지 않았다. 반면, 고독감을 종속변수로 하는 분석결과에 의하면 동ㆍ별거 자체는 노인의 고독감에 유의미한 영향을 미치지 않았으나, 노인의 결혼상태와 상호작용 효과가 관찰되었다. 즉, 배우자가 있는 노인의 경우 자녀와 동거하는 집단과 별거하는 집단간에 고독감 수준에 차이가 없었으나, 배우자가 없는 노인의 경우에는 자녀와 동거하는 노인에 비하여 별거하는 노인들의 고독감이 높아지는 것으로 나타났다. 노인의 사회인구학적 특성 중에서, 결혼상태, 건강상태, 경제수준은 행복감과 고독감 모두에 유의미한 영향을 미쳤으며, 노인의 성별과 연령은 행복감에만 유의미한 영향을 주었다. 이러한 분석결과를 기초로 하여, 자녀동거 및 별거 노인들의 심리적 복지감 증진을 위한 정책적 시사점을 논의하였다.

영문 초록

In Korean society, three generational stem family has been the norm where elderly parents live with the eldest son and cared by daughter-in-law. However, there has been rapid changes in inter-generational expectations and family norms in recent years and consequent changes in the living arrangements of the elderly. Proportion of the elders who live by themselves increased dramatically in recent years. At the same time, it is often assumed that elders in contemporary Korea also prefer to live by themselves. In this study, we wants to examine the relationship between the living arrangement and psychological well-being of the elderly. Specific research questions of the study are : Does psychological wellbeing of the elderly differ by their living arrangement after the socio-demographic characteristics of the elderly are controlled? Are there any significant interaction effects of living arrangement and major socio-demographic characteristics, such as marital status and health? In order to explore these questions, data were gathered from 940 rural elderly who has at least one adult child in Korea using the structured questionnaire. Results from the hierarchical regression analyses shows that elders who live with their children are happier than elders live by themselves. However, living arrangement shows no such effect on the level of loneliness of the elderly parents. Significant marital status interaction effect was found on the loneliness among the rural elderly: The elderly with no living spouse reports lower levels of loneliness when they live with their adult child while no such association was found among the elders with living spouse. These results suggest the need to explore further the complex relationship between living arrangement and well-being of the Korean elderly and their preferences and expectations regarding inter-generational obligations and living arrangements.
