여성, 전쟁, 기억 그리고 <박씨전>

국문 초록

이 글은 <박씨전>의 작품 세계와 병자호란과의 상관성을 여성주의적 관점에서 고찰하고자 한 논문이다. <박씨전>을 병자호란과 연관 지어 보는 시각은 기존 논의에서도 여러 번에 걸쳐 확인되나 이 글은 <박씨전>을 병자호란에 대한 당대 여성들의 전쟁 체험, 전쟁에 대한 여성들의 기억과 관련 지어 논의했다는 점에서 차별성을 지닌다. <박씨전>에서 서사를 이끌어 가는 중요한 두 요소는 박씨의 추모(醜貌)와, 박씨와 용골대 형제가 피화당에서 벌인 전쟁담이다. 기존의 연구사에서도 박씨의 추모에 대해서, 그리고 그 전쟁담에 대해서 혹은 둘 사이의 긴밀성 여부에 대해서 논의한 연구들이 있다. 이 논문 역시 그 두 요소에 주목한다. 그러나 이 논문은 다음과 같은 이유로 기존의 연구와 차별화된다. 첫 번째로 이 논문은 박씨의 추모 및 이인(異人)으로서의 뛰어난 능력을 부덕(婦德)과의 상관성 아래에서 고찰하여 여성의 색(色)과 부덕에 대한 조선 시대 양반 남성 혹은 그들 중심의 질서에 잘 훈육된 존재들의 허위적 시선을 분석해 내었다. <박씨전>에서 청나라 황후가 조선을 공격할 수 있는 근거로 드는 이유가 조선 남성들의 탐재호색인데, 탐재호색은 남성적 부정부패의 대표적인 양상이며 그 중 호색이라는 요소는 작품 전반부의 주요 갈등 요인인 여성의 추모와 관련되는 것이기도 하다. 두 번째로 피화당이라는 공간의 성격 및 그곳에서 박씨와 청나라 장수들 사이에서 전개되었던 전쟁 양상에 대한 분석을 통해, 이 서사가 병자호란 때 여성들, 특히 강화도에 피난했던 양반 여성들의 전쟁 체험과 밀접하게 관련되어 있다는 점을 논의하였다. 생태적 공간처럼 묘사되면서 동시에 자동방어기제가 작동하는 것처럼 재현된 피화당이라는 공간과, 그 안에 있는 여성들을 겁칙하려고 접근한 용울대가 효수라는 방식을 통해 징치되는 장면과, 왕비까지도 볼모로 잡혀가다가 박씨에 의해 구출되는 것으로 허구화되는 지점과, 환향녀에 대한 동정적 시선의 노출 등은 이 작품의 전쟁담이 지니는 고유함으로, 이 작품에는 지속적으로 여성의 섹슈얼리티와 관련한 문제 제기가 내장되어 있다. 뿐만 아니라 박씨는 여타 고소설의 여주인공과는 이질적인 요소를 지닌 인물이라는 점에 대해서도 논의하였다. 기존의 연구사에서 박씨는 주로 여성 영웅의 선대적 인물이나 이인형 인물 혹은 우부현녀형 모티프로 설명되었는데, 본고에서는 조선조 여성 현실과 관련하여 박씨부인의 인물 형상화 방식을 분석함으로써 박씨의 인물 형상이 조선조 여성 교육의 화두였던 부덕(婦德)으로 포획되지 않는 지점이 있음을 논의하였다. 즉 <박씨전>은 조선조 부덕 이데올로기에 포획되지 않은 박씨라는 여성 인물의 활약을 통해 병자호란이라는 전쟁 상황과 여성의 섹슈얼리티와의 문제를 소설적으로 재현해 낸 작품이며, 그 전쟁에서 여성들이 경험해야 했었던 아픈 기억에 대한 소설적 대응 방식을 보여준 치유의 문학이다.

영문 초록

This thesis is an attempt to consider the corelation of Park-ssi-jeon(朴氏傳) and Pyeong-ja-ho-ran(丙子胡亂) in the feminist viewpoint. Actually the consideration of the relation between Park-ssi-jeon and Pyeong-ja-ho-ran was already attempted in several studies, but this thesis is quite different from the previous ones in the sense that it relates Park-ssi-jeon with the women's experiences and memories of Pyeong-ja-ho-ran. Distinctive two leading aspects of this narrative are the ugly appearance of the heroine, Park-ssi, and the episodes of war which were happened to Park-ssi and Yong-gol-dai brothers in Pi-wha-dang(避禍堂) which was built to protect people from war. About these two aspects, there were many studies and this thesis also tries to focus on them, but differently. The different point of view of this thesis can be found in these two aspects. First, this study considers the ugly appearance of Park-ssi and her extraordinary power in relation to womanly virtues, and analyses the deceptive consciousness of women's sexuality and womanly virtues found in the aristocratic class so-called Yangban(兩班) or people who were well disciplined by the dominant order in the Chosun(朝鮮) dynasty. In Park-ssi-jeon, the queen of Chung(淸) dynasty mentioned men's disposition to covet wealth and beautiful women in Chosun dynasty as one of main causes for defeating Chosun dynasty by Chung dynasty. The propensity for coveting wealth and beautiful women is seen to be one representative aspect of illegality and corruption in men. In this novel, the aspect of strong desire for beautiful women is related to the ugliness of Park-ssi, which causes main conflicts in the first half of this novel. Secondly, this thesis tries to prove that this narrative is closely connected with war experiences of women, especially women in the high class who managed to escape to Kang-wha-do(江華鳥) by analysing the characteristics of the place of Pi-wha-dang and the aspects of war situation which were developed between Park-ssi and generals of Chung dynasty. The unique aspects of this narrative as a war narrative are as follows: place, Pi-wha-dang which was represented as a sort of ecological space with an automatic defense system, the scene which shows that Yong-wul-dai who had attempted to rape women in Pi-wha-dang was hanged, the fictive scene where even the captured queen of Chosun dynasty was saved by Park-ssi, and the sympathy for the fate of women who had been captured by soldiers of Chung dynasty and returned to their native place. Through these aspects we can find the distinctive problems which are related to women's sexuality. Besides those elements, the different aspects in the heroine of this narrative were also discussed in this study. While previous studies tended to see Park-ssi either as the prototype of a woman heroine with extraordinary power or the type of a wise wife who advised and helped her foolish husband, this thesis analysed her characterization with relation to the situation of women in Chosun dynasty and found that her characterization could not be fully explained by the womanly virtues which was strongly stressed in the education of women in those times. In this sense, Park-ssi-jeon is thought to represent the problematic situation of Pyeong-ja-ho-ran and the issue of women's sexuality through the characterization of Park-ssi who was not captured by the ideology of womanly virtues of Chosun dynasty, and further try to heal painful memories of women's suffering in Pyeong-ja-ho-ran.
