서사무가 <바리공주>의 변이양상과 여성적 경험의 재현

국문 초록

서사무가는 巫라는 전문적인 전승자에 의해 구연되는 것이다. <바리공주>는 전국적으로 분포된 서사무가로서 지역에 따른 변이를 뚜렷하게 보여주는 유형인데, 특히 동해안지역 전승본들의 경우 문학적 가치가 높다는 점에서 일찍부터 많은 관심을 받아왔다. 본 연구는 <바리공주>의 변이양상을 중시하고, 텍스트와 전승자, 청중을 함께 주목하여 동해안본의 특성이 무엇에서 기인하고 있으며 그 지향점이 무엇인지를 밝히고자 시도되었다. 서울본과의 비교를 통해 서술시각과 서술방식을 분석해본 결과, 서울본이 남성인물 중심적 서술시각과 요약적 서술방식으로 일관하고 있는 것에 비해, 동해안본은 길대부인과 바리데기를 중심인물로 부각하고 여성들의 경험을 구체화하여 재현적 서술방식으로 그려내고 있음을 발견할 수 있었다. 사설의 변이양상으로 볼 때, 동해안본은 임신과 출산대목을 제외한 모든 대목에서 확장과 부연이 일어났으며, 그러한 현상은 특히 여성적 경험영역과 밀착되는 대목일수록 적극적으로 나타났다. 또한 해당 장면들은 상황재현적인 장면화를 지향하여 생동감을 보여주고 있었다. 이를 통해 동해안본의 특성들은 새로운 분위기의 문학적 재현을 탁월하게 구현한 창조적 성과임이 확인되었다. 이러한 다시쓰기가 가능했던 이유로는 동해안 지역의 무풍이라는 종교ㆍ사회ㆍ문화적 요인들과 함께, <바리공주>가 전승자와 향유자 모두에게 체험적 공감에 기반한 정서적 유대를 이끌어낼 수 있었던 '여성의 이야기'였다는 점도 중요하게 작용했을 것으로 본다.

영문 초록

Shamanistic epic is orally carried on by a specialized transmitter called "Mudang(shaman)". Bari-gongju has drawn a great deal of scholarly attention because it is the representative shamanistic epic found nationwide and its different versions show distinctive characteristics varying locations. Those found in the east coastal areas are known to be of high literary value as different versions. This study investigates the varied forms of Bari-gongju and attempts to identify the characteristics and intentions of the east coastal versions of the story by focusing on such factors as text, transmitter and audience among others that bring about variations. First, as a result of comparative analysis to the Seoul version in the points of perspective and method of story telling, it was found out that in the east coastal versions, Mrs. Gildae and Bari-gongju are main characters and their specific experiences are described in representative style while in Seoul version male perspective and summarizing way of story telling are consistent throughout the story. Looking into the variant forms of narration, in the east coastal version, every part of the story, except those related to pregnancy and baby delivery of the first to the sixth woman, is expanded and elaborated. It is especially so when the part is closely related to feminine experiences. It is also found out that these parts become more vitalized with scenic description. This study confirms previous studies and shows that the east coastal version is more than a variation. It is an excellent achievement of literary creation of new style and mood. Recreation of the story is thought to be possible because of the social and religious factor, i.e., shamanistic tradition in the area and the fact that the tale of Bari-gongju is a woman's story based on female experiences, told by a woman and enjoyed by female audience, which can induce emotional compassion. This study can serve as a foundation for further discussion on literary characteristics and meanings of shamanistic epic. On the basis of this study, researches in literary esthetics such as principles of epic description of east coastal version of Bari-gongju, plan for securing audience compassion and the relationship between the ritual function and narrative construction strategies are hoped to be carried out in the future along with the in-depth researches in oral transmission theories. Motherhood and women's daily lives in relation to formalization should also be explored. These areas still remain as subjects of future research.
