국문 초록

1910년대에 창작된 최찬식 소설의 '여성 인물'은 '여학생'이라는 근대적 문화 기호 속에서 소설의 새로움을 설득하는 매력적인 주인공으로 형상화 되었음에도 불구하고, 그들을 사회적으로 근거 짓는 '학교'라든가 '교육'의 차원에서는 적극적으로 서사화 되지 않았다. 여성 인물 자신도 여학교의 체험을 통해 실제적인 자기 변혁을 경험한다거나 자신의 사회적 위상을 재정립하는 기회로 삼는 모습은 보여주지 않는다. 이들은 혼인을 통해 완고 세대가 지배하는 새로운 가정으로 편입되며, 완고 세대의 부정성과 대면하면서 새로운 갈등에 직면한다. 그 과정에서 여성 인물은 '현모양처'의 전형성과 '정절 이데올로기'를 고수하는 형식으로 새로운 가정에 적응함으로써, 근대 교육의 수혜자로서 부여받은 새로운 정체성을 소거시키는 삶을 살아간다. 소설 속의 '여학생'은 근대적 주체로서의 삶을 지속시키지 못하며, 근대적 경험을 근대적 언어로 표현할 수 있는 문화적 출구도 형성하지 못하고 있다. 가정 내적으로 세대간의 '대화'와 '소통'을 주도하는 것은 '완성된' 근대적 법률 체계와 그 수행자들로서, 모두 남성 인물들로 한정되어 있다. 여성 인물이 자기 인식의 정당한 출구를 찾지 못한 채, 법률에 의해 재조정된 배우자의 가정 안으로 '순응'하고 '포섭'되는 과정은 근대적 소설 공간이 균열적으로 자기의 세계를 드러내는 출발의 지점을 보여준다.

영문 초록

The schoolgirl characters in Choi Chan-Sik's Novels in 1910's are appeared very fascinatingly with the modern cultural signs such as school, park, zoo, institute, train and newspapers. But they are not expressed with the identity as schoolgirls in the coherence of truly modern narrative space. They don't show their growth through the school education and don't have any communicative competence with thier modern experience like love. As soon as they are married, they are adapted themselves to the family of their husband which is dominated by the old-fashioned ideas. They have new difficulties with their husband's mother who dislikes schoolgirls in the reason of their modern way of thinking, life styles and distorted view about them. But they adapt themselves to new circumstances by virtue of the traditional faithfulness. In the process, they loss their educational experiences and modern identities. The schoolgirl characters in the novels don't retain their modern life style any more, and don't have any capability about their problems such as a plot to do harm about infidelity. Some characters have a nervous breakdown from mental fatigue and try to suicide. Those are the male characters who major law or work as modern legal experts that solve the problems. The female characters don't try to find the reasonable solution by themselves. Finally they go with the new family which is composed by marriage. Such process show the cracked points in the modern society.
