국문 초록

본고에서는 2009년에 출판된 벡위드의 저서 [실크로드 제국들]을 통하여 최근 서구학계의 중앙아시아 중심의 역사관으로 유라시아의 역사에 대한 관점을 비판적으로 검토했다. 벡위드는 5천년이 넘는 중앙아시아의 역사를 유목의 등장과 함께 유라시아의 교류중심에 서면서 역사의 주축임을 통사적으로 서술했다. 세부적인 역사적 사실의 나열보다는 거시적인 역사의 흐름을 서술하는 데에 주력했으며, 역사, 언어, 고고학적 연구를 융합하여 새로운 중앙아시아의 역사상을 세우려고 했다. 이 책은 기존에 알고 있던 중국 또는 서양문명 중심의 역사서술에서 탈피해서 중앙아시아의 관점에서 본 새로운 역사인식을 제시하는 학사적 의의가 있다. 과감히 한국사의 틀을 벗어나서 넓은 유라시아의 역사흐름을 조망하고 그 속에서 한국사를 바라보려는 노력이 필요하다. 그러한 점에서 벡위드의 연구가 의미하는 바는 매우 크다고 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

In this review article, author overviews C.I. Beckwith's 'Empires of Silk Road'(published in 2009 by Princeton Univ. Press). In his monograph, Beckwith tried to overview the whole Eurasian steppe, and synthesized linguistics, archaeology, history and mythology. His smart view on Central Asia based on multidisciplinary studies, made it possible to view the real image of Central Asia, which were hidden behind the image of 'Silk Road' made recently by Western world. He accented that Steppe empires didn't consist of plunders and stockbreeders, but they played a role as a core for eurasian civilizations from Far Eastern Asia to Europe. His flowing writing easily, but profoundly shows the essence of history of eurasian empires. It is worthwhile to point out that his interest also include Korean history as a part of Eurasia. Surely, some points of his view on korean ancient history are controversial, but the reason that he regards korean history as a part of eurasian history is quite persuasive. So, his lack of detail understandings on korean history doesn't make his book underestimated. Otherwise, he shows that korean history should open up their academic horizon into the context of eurasian history. Like this, his latest work for Central Asia shows perspectives not only to study of Central Asia, but to Korea.
