서정주 시의 西方 지향과 정토 사상

국문 초록

이 논문은 서정주 시에 나타나는 서방 지향으로서의 정토 사상을 살펴봄으로써 불교적 상상력을 토대로 한 서정주의 시적 인식의 구체적 내용을 심층적으로 고찰하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 서정주 시의 서방 지향에 관련하여 그동안 진행된 선행 연구는 미미한 수준에 있다. 서정주의 작품들을 분석해 그것을 정토 사상의 교학과 상관시키는 논의는 더더욱 드물었다고 할 수 있다. 이 논문은 서정주의 시집 귀촉도와 서정주시선에 수록된 시편들이 신라시대 불교의 한 주류적 특성인 정토신앙과 밀접한 관계에 놓여 있다는 데 주목했다. 신라 시대의 불교는 아미타불신앙, 관음신앙, 미륵신앙이 혼재하는 양상을 보였으며, 그것을 정토 사상의 전개라고 부를 수 있다. 이러한 신앙 형태는 자력으로 깨달음을 성취하는 것이 아니라 타력에 의해 극락세계에 왕생하겠다는 염원을 담은 것으로서 신라 불교의 발달사에서 중요한 맥락을 형성하는 것이었다. 서정주의 시에 등장하는 '西域', '서녘', '도솔천' 등의 시어들은 그의 시가 정토사상과 밀접하게 관련되어 있음을 명료하게 드러내는 것이다. 서정주의 시는 삶의 고통과 비애에 휩싸인 존재들을 정토신앙의 힘으로 구제해 극락에 살게 하려는 지향을 보여준다. 뿐만 아니라 서정주의 시는 정토신앙의 수행법, 신라 설화, 불교 경전의 경문 등을 모티프로 해서 창작된 경우가 많다. 전통 고전인 춘향전의 '춘향'을 모티프로 한 연작시편에서 궁구한 영원한 사랑의 구현 또한 정토 신앙에 대한 믿음으로써 가능한 것이었다. 서정주 시에 나타나는 정토 사상은 이후 그의 시가 집중적으로 관심을 보인 '신라 정신' 탐구로 이어지고, 또 불교의 윤회론과 연기론을 기초로 한 시편들로 이어지면서 '영원주의' 시학을 완성하는 경로를 보여준다. 서정주의 시는 불교적 상상력을 바탕으로 함으로써 그 내적 질서에 있어 연속성을 담보하고 있다는 신뢰를 갖게 한다. 서정주의 시가 보여준 서방 지향과 정토 사상의 시편들은 그가 건설한 '영원주의' 시학의 한 갈래로 성격 지을 수 있다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this thesis is to deeply consider specific content of poetic recognition of Seo Jeong-Ju based on Buddhist imagination by examining a pure land idea as Western orientation appearing in Seo Jeong-Ju's poems. Preceding researches progressed meanwhile in relation with western orientation of Seo Jeong-Ju's poems are in a negligible level. There is only a mention that it is related to the Buddhist world view, but it can be said that discussions correlating it with teaching of the pure land idea by analyzing works of Seo Jeong-Ju are rare. This thesis noticed that poems of Gwichokdo(1948) and Selected Poems of Seo Jeong-Ju (1956) which are a collection of poems have a close relationship with the pure land faith that is a mainstream property of Buddhism in the S hilla Dynasty. Buddhism of the Shilla Dynasty showed an aspect that Amita Buddha, faith, Avalokitesvara faith and Maitreya faith are mixed, and it can be called development of the pure land idea. These faith fo rms contains people's desire that will revive to the Land of Happiness by the power of another instead of accomplishing enlightenment with s elf-effort and formed an important context in the development history of Shilla Buddhism. Poetic words appearing in poems of Seo Jeong-Ju, such as 'countries bordering on Western China', 'the West' and 'Tusita', etc. clearly show that his poems are closely related with the pure land idea. Poems of Seo Jeong-Ju show an intention that tries to make existences surrounded with pains and sadness of life live in the Paradise by rescuing them with the power of Pure Land faith. In addition, there are many cases that poems of Seo Jeong-Ju were created with the motive of self-discipline techniques of the Pure Land faith, Shilla fables and Buddhist scriptures, etc. Realization of eternal love investigated in serial poems with the motive of 'Chunhyang' of Tale of Chunhyang which is a traditional classic was also possible by believing the Pure Land faith. The Pure Land faith appearing in poems of Seo Jeong-Ju later continues a quest of 'Shilla spirit' that his poems intensively had interest in, and again continues poems based on the transmigration theory of souls and theory of dependent origination of Buddhism so that it shows a path that 'eternalism' poetry is completed. Poems of Seo Jeong-Ju are based on Buddhist imagination so that it gives trust that secures continuity in its internal order. Poems of the Western orientation and pure land idea that Poems of Seo Jeong-Ju showed can be characterized as one branch of 'eternalism' poetry constructed by him.
