국문 초록

트리덴티눔 공의회에서 법전화된 트리덴티눔 칙령은 교회 내에 신성이 직접 표현된 그림을 철저히 배격한 것처럼 보이지만 사실 가톨릭교회 성직자들에게 칙령에 대한 결정적인 권한을 부여하여 가톨릭교회가 종교 미술을 자신들의 의도대로 사용할 수 있도록 허락하였다. 따라서 포스트 트리덴티눔의 종교 미술에 실질적인 영향을 끼친 것은 개괄적인 내용을 정리한 트리덴티눔 칙령이 아니라 공의회 이후 후대의 이론가들에 의해 정리된 미술 이론이다. 특히 추기경 가브리엘레 팔레오티와 체사레 바로니오는 교회 내 성상의 존재가 가톨릭교회의 메시지 전달에 효과적이라는 것에 주목하여 신도들의 감성을 자극하는 종교 미술을 적극적으로 지지하였다. 이로써 포스트 트리덴티눔의 가톨릭교회는 종교 미술을 통하여 17세기 초 신교도의 종교개혁에 대한 가톨릭교회의 승리를 선언적으로 과시할 수 있었다.

영문 초록

This study examines Post-Trent art theories focusing on the books written by the cardinals Gabriele Paleotti and Cesare Baronio. The Catholic church held the Council of Trent(Concilium Tridentinum, 1545-1563) and reorganized their doctrines and art policies that were questioned by the Protestants. One of the most serious issues criticized by the Protestants included the use of art works in churches. The Council of Trent, thus, established the Decree of Trent to clarify those questions raised as well as to vest the Catholic church fathers with full power of using religious arts at their own purposes. Paleotti's Discorso intorno alle imagini Sacre e Profane and Baronio's Annales Ecclesiastici represent the important art policies in the Post-Trent era. It was not the Decree of Trent, but the Post-Trent art theories that were applied on religious arts in details. In their books Paleotti and Baronio pursued an art that could draw attention and stir the emotion of the faithful. Thus, they could propagate the authority of the Catholic church who knew the power of art works and used holy images for their effective way of conveying their doctrines.
