여성, 문화 그리고 국제영화제의 역할

국문 초록

이 논문은 올해 13년의 역사를 갖고 있는 영화제라는 문화 이벤트이자 축제이며 국제영화제인 '서울국제여성영화제'에 대한 연구이다. 1997년, '여성의 눈으로 세상을 보자'라는 캐치프레이즈로 시작된 서울국제여성영화제는 '여성' '영화' '축제'를 컨셉으로 새로운 영화제의 바람을 일으켜왔다. 2010년 현재 국내에서 개최되는 국제영화제는 부산국제영화제를 포함, 총 6개이다. 그리고 다른 한편에는 독립영화제 및 주제별 영화제가 있다. 여기에서 서울국제여성영화제는 재정규모, 재정 출처, 프로그램 구성, 영화제의 비전 등으로 볼 때 국제영화제와 독립영화제 사이에 놓여있다고 볼 수 있다. 여성영화제의 지난 역사는 이렇게 한국의 다종다양한 영화제들 사이에서 각각의 영화제와 경쟁, 경합, 협조, 연대하면서 고유한 형태를 찾아가는 과정이었다. 이는 전지구적ㆍ지역적 소통과 연대, 그리고 영화산업과 영상문화의 미래와 맞물려 영화제라는 위상 속에서 영화제의 다양성과 가능성을 보여줄 수 있는 하나의 모델을 제시했다고 할 수 있다. 그렇다면 여성에 의한, 여성을 위한 영화 만들기의 역사에서 여성영화제라는 제도는 어떤 역할을 해왔는가? 문화로서의 여성과 영화의 관계는 영화 관객의 대부분이 여성이라는 견해에도 불구하고 그것은 결코 그저 편안한 관계가 아닌 언제나 애증과 긴장의 드라마를 노정해왔다. 세계 여성영화의 흐름을 소개하고 재능 있는 여성영화인력 발굴에 앞장서온 서울국제여성영화제는 이제, 아시아 여성영화 네트워크의 중심이자 세계 최대 규모의 여성영화제로 성장했다. 하지만 이것은 다른 무엇보다도 관객들의 힘이다. 결국 여성영화제의 역사는 여성들이 함께 참여하면서 만들어내는 여성 관객의 공통적인 경험 공동체로서의 경험의 역사이기 때문이다. 하지만 이 논문은 그동안의 서울국제여성영화제의 성과와 위상을 점검하는데 머무르진 않는다. 즉, 재정 규모의 확대와 프로그램의 변화, 그리고 조직의 변화라는 측면에서 2008년 10회 이후 서울국제여성영화제가 이전에 비해 '국제영화제'로서의 면모를 더 강하게 띠고 있다는 것에 주목한다. 안팍으로 도전을 받고 있는 서울국제여성영화제가 '국제영화제'로서 직면한 역할과 당면과제를 제시하고자 하는 이 연구는 서울국제여성영화제와 함께 해온 내부자의 입장을 분명히 한 것으로 기존의 국제영화제에 대한 연구에 기대고 여성문화 활동 연구의 성격을 분명히 하되 자료의 접근성과 활용도면에서 기존의 다른 문화 연구와는 일정한 차별성을 갖고자 하였다.

영문 초록

This thesis is about International Women's Film Festival in Seoul(IWFFIS) that has been a cultural event for 13 years in Korea. With combined concepts of women, film, and festival, IWFFIS has received wide attention since 1997. There are total 6 international film festivals including Pusan International Film Festival in Korea. Also, there are Film Festivals by subjects and Independent Film Festival. From vies of financial status, financial sources, programs, and the potential of film festival, IWFFIS is in between International film festivals and Independent film festivals. For the past years, IWFFIS has been establishing its identity as competing, cooperating with various film festivals in Korea. IWFFIS reveals the potentiality of a film festival that leads global/ local communication and cooperation in film industries and moving image culture. What roles did IWFFIS play in the history of films made by/ for women as a cultural system? Although most of the audiences are females, there are always a drama of love-hatred and tension in the cultural relationship between women and film. IWFFIS has been taking the initiative in introducing internationalㆍnational woman films to public, and discovering human resources for woman film. With such passionate support from audiences, IWFFIS has become the center of women film network and the largest woman film festival in the world. Eventually, IWFFIS became the history of women participating in and discovering woman film as audiences. Nevertheless, this thesis is not just about accomplishments and prestige of IWFFIS. In the aspects of enlarging the financial status and the change of programs and structures, the thesis focuses on how IWFFIS made a progress as a globalized film festival since 2008. The purpose of this study is to suggest what roles IWFFIS should perform as international film festival and what facing subjects IWFFIS has. The materials in this study is collected by WFFIS staff not losing its nature of woman film study. The study draws distinction from other existing studies of culture in terms of material accessibility and application.
