<소현성록>의 ‘석파’ 연구

국문 초록

초기 국문장편소설인 <소현성록>에 등장하는 석파는 첩이면서 자식이 없기 때문에 소부 내의 위상이 낮지만, 첩에게 요구되던 덕목을 충실히 이행한 인물이다. 그는 소부에 대한 긍지를 바탕으로 정실부인과 적자에게 충성하며 개인의 안위보다 가문을 위한다. 그러나 그는 신분적 조건으로 인하여 유창한 말솜씨와 거리낌 없는 행동으로 활약하게 된다. 석파는 이러한 성격을 바탕으로 작품 속에서 구성상의 기능을 수행하는데, 먼저 석파는 여러 인물들 사이에서 사건의 내막과 문제적 상황을 드러내고 직접 갈등을 일으키거나 다른 인물을 충동하여 사건의 빌미를 만든다. 이러한 역할을 통해 석파는 사건의 생산과 확대에 기여한다. 또 석파는 희학을 잘하는 본인의 성격을 무기로 긴장이 고조되는 중간에 웃음을 유발하며 사건의 파국이나 관계의 단절에 이르지 않도록 분위기를 조성해 나간다. 이 외에도 석파는 소부 인물들을 품평하면서 서술자적 논평을 대신하며, 이상적 인물로 형상화되는 소부 구성원의 행위에 대해 이견을 제시하여 독자의 시각을 반영한다. 이처럼 석파는 좀 더 형식적으로 자유로운 작품에 등장하여 향유층인 민중을 대변하는 말뚝이와 방자형 인물과 달리, 작품 창작에 보다 전문성이 요구되는 국문장편소설에 등장하여 향유층의 이념적 테두리 안에서 서사적 기능을 수행한다. 석파와 같은 인물은 <옥환빙>, <현몽쌍룡기>, <현씨양웅쌍린기> 연작, <쌍천기봉> 등에도 등장하는데, <소현성록>과 <옥환빙> 등에 등장하는 서모와 얼매의 활동 범위가 가내로 한정되었던 것에 반해서 주인공의 삼촌으로 설정되어있는 <현씨양웅쌍린기>연작에서는 인물의 활동 영역을 확대하여 더욱 다양한 화소에 간여하며 서사 전개를 돕는다. 이처럼 <소현성록>과 같은 국문장편소설의 작가는 석파라는 인물을 통해 더욱 전문화된 형태로 작품 창작의 편의를 도모했으며 이 인물을 각 작품의 특성에 맞게 활용하였다. 결국 석파형 인물은 소설사에서 국문장편소설의 서사 전개와 장면 구성을 위해 작가가 선택적으로 활용할 수 있는 ‘모델’로 기능하고 있는 것이다.

영문 초록

Seokpa appearing in Sohyonseong-rok, the early feature-length story in Korean language, conducts her duty as a mistress although her position is low in the Sos (the family having a surname “So”) because she is a mistress and does not have her own child. She is devoted to the legal wife and her son and thinks the family is bigger than the individual’s comfort. This attitude is based on her pride for the Sos and the family members. But she plays an active role by speaking eloquently and showing unreserved behaviors. This is possible because she is liberated from the virtues needed for other women from the Sos because of her social position Seokpa plays a constructing role in the work based on her character. For one thing she shows the inside story and the situation in trouble coming and going to other characters and causes conflict or make others cause an event. By doing this she helps an event happen and spread. Using her character making a joke well, Seokpa triggers laughter amid increase in conflict. And she does not let an event reach a catastrophe or relationships be finished and leads to promote the mood to solve the problems. Beyond this she represents a narrative evaluation evaluating the figures in the Sos and reflects readers’ views by expressing a different opinion about the Sos’ member’s behaviors that is described as an ideal character. Seokpa appears in a feature-length story, which requires more professionalism in creating a work and conduct a narrative function within the people’s ideological frame. These characters like Seokpa appears in Okhwanbing, Hyonmong-Ssangryong-gi, Hyunssi-yannwoong- Ssangryn-gi series, Ssangchungibong. While the activities of father’s mistress and her daughter in Sohyonseong-rok and Okhwanbing is confined in the house, those of a hero’s uncle in Hyunssi-yannwoong- Ssangryn-gi series, extend and are associated with many subject matters and help unfold the story. Eventually, a character like a type of Seokpa acts as a chosen “model” for a writer to fold a novel in Korean language and constitute scenes.
