How much do your coworkers expect of you?: A new lens to extra-role behavior

영문 초록

Extra-role behaviors (ERBs) refers to voluntarily going beyond job requirements. To expand the existing ERB literature which focuses on ERB givers, this study explored how coworkers' expectations of ERB are influenced by target employees' seniority and industry. Using a sample of 381 employees, this study found that altruism and civic virtue are more likely to be regarded as in-role behaviors for seniors than for juniors. Employees of service organizations have higher levels of coworkers' expectations of ERB than do employees of manufacturing organizations. This study contributes to enriching the ERB literature by providing the perspective of potential ERB receivers. Implications for future research and the practice are discussed.
