서(恕), 반서(反恕), 그리고 거울 뉴런(mirror neuron)

국문 초록

이 글은 공자가 제시한 서(恕)를 인지과학이 발견한 거울 뉴런과 연관시켜 이해하려고 한다. 거울 뉴런이 도덕의 기초라는 환원주의적 주장의 타당성 여부를 서와 반서(反恕)의 개념을 중심으로 논할 것이다. 공감의 신경생물학적 기초로서 거울 뉴런의 역할과 기능을 받아들인다고 하더라도 우리는 여전히 서와 반서의 행위 양식을 동일한 생물학적 기초로부터 유도할 수 있다. 이 때문에 거울 뉴런을 도덕의 기초로 간주하려는 환원주의적 시도는 실패할 것이다. 도덕 자체가 단순한 인과관계로 환원되지 않는 복잡한 요소들로 구성된 인간적인 삶의 양상 가운데 하나이기 때문이다.

영문 초록

This paper intends to explicate Confucius’s idea of ‘consideration’ in relation to a theory of ‘mirror neuron’ in cognitive science. I shall discuss whether the mirror neuron is a basis of ethical emotions centering the concepts of the consideration and the reverse-consideration. Although we might accept the function of the mirror neuron as the biological basis of sympathy, we can still infer behavior patterns of the consideration and the reverse-consideration from the same biological basis. Accordingly, the reductive attempt to regard the mirror neuron as the foundation of morality would fail. This is not because the mirror neuron is inappropriate as the basis of morality, but because the morality itself is one of the complicated aspects of a human life, which cannot be reduced to a simple cause-effect relation.
