『역학계몽요해(易學啓蒙要解)』의 도서역학적 의의

국문 초록

『역학계몽요해』는 조선 최초의 『역학계몽』 주석서이다. 최항은 한계희(韓繼禧)와 함께 세조의 명을 받아 많은 동료 학자들과의 공동 작업으로 『역학계몽』에 대한 문답형식의 『역학계몽요해』를 간행한다. 이 논문에서는 『역학계몽요해』를 통해서 조선 도서역의 초기 모습을 규명하고자 하였다. 우선 세조가 『역학계몽』에 주목한 이유를 살펴보고자 하며, 『역학계몽요해』의 구성과 주요 특징을 분석하였다. 그런 과정을 통해서 조선 도서역의 단초를 규명하고자 하고, 더 나아가 조선 역학의 성리학적 정초과정을 밝혀보고자 하였다. 고려 말 대체적으로 학자들은 정이의 『역전』을 수용하였고, 이런 경향은 조선 초기에 이어졌다. 조선 초기의 유학자들은 정이의 유가적인 도덕적 원리와 의리역학적 해석방법론을 부분적으로 받아들여 자신의 역학 이론을 성립하였다. 이런 상황에서 세조의 『역학계몽요해』는 상수를 토대로 의리를 종합하는 주희의 역철학에 대한 관심을 촉발하는 계기가 되었다. 즉 『역학계몽요해』는 의리역학이 주된 흐름을 차지하고 있던 조선 전기 역학사에 주희의 상수와 의리를 종합한 이론을 소개함으로써 조선 전기 도서역의 단초를 마련했다는 점에서 상당히 의의가 있다. 하지만 『역학계몽』을 통한 주자학적 또는 성리학적 세계관의 정립은 『역학계몽요해』에서는 아직 이루어지지 않았다. 가장 큰 요인은 세조 전 기간 동안 성리학에 대한 이해가 아직 미성숙했고, 불교가 유학보다 더 우대받는 경향이 있었기 때문이다. 그리고 『역학계몽요해』는 자신만의 독자적인 관점에서 『역학계몽』을 이해하기보다는 기존의 중국학자들의 주석에 의존하는 한계를 보인다.

영문 초록

Yeokhakgemongyohae is the first commentary of Yeokhyakgemong in the Joseon Dynasty. Along with Han Gyehee and other colleagues, Choi Hang published the Yeokhakgemongyohae by the order of King Sejo. This article attempts to analyze early Joseon studies of Diagram- Picture study of the Yijing. I examined why King Sejo had interest in the Yeokhyakgemong and discussed the structure and major feature of the work. In the process, I examined a start of the Joseon Diagram- Picture study of the Yijing and furthermore revealed how the Joseon Confucianism made the foundation. Confucianists accepted Cheng Yi's Yeokjeon in the end of the Koryo Dynasty, and Joseon Confucianists succeeded the tradition. The early Joseon Confucianists established their own theories of the Yijing on the basis of Cheng Yi's Confucian moral principle and ethical interpretation of the Yijing in some parts. The Yeokhakgemongyohae provided a trigger for interest in Zhu Xi's theory of the Yijing, which synthesized Image- Number study of the Yijing with morality. In other words, the Yeokhakgemongyohae has a considerable significance in that it introduced Zhu Xi's theory to the early Joseon academy whose main study was focused on the ethical interpretation of the Yijing. However, the Yeokhakgemongyohae could not establish its original Confucian world through the Yeokhakgemong. The biggest reason for it is that Confuciansits did not have a though understanding of Confucianism in the period of King Sejo. In addition, Buddhisim was more popular than Confucianism. The Yeokhakgemongyohae has also a limitation of relying on Chinese scholars' s interpretation in order to understand the Yeokhakgemong.
