국문 초록

이 논문의 목적은 교육철학의 가장 기본적인 성격을 철학의 본래 의미에 비추어 연구자 나름으로 정의하는 데 있다. 교육철학을 교육이라 불리는 인간 활동에 대한 철학적 탐구라고 할 때 우리는 그 방법의 측면, 곧 철학적 방법이 언제 어디서 어떻게 시작되었는지를 먼저 살펴볼 필요가 있다. 교육이라는 활동은 그 어떤 객관적 실체로 먼저 존재하는 것이 아니라 그것을 탐구하는 철학적 방법에 따라 달리 규정될 수 있기 때문이다. 이 논문에서 연구자는 '철학'을 고대희랍적인 의미에서의 '필로소피아'로 한정 짓고 그것이 처음 시작될 때 사람들이 가졌던 문제의식, 곧 그것은 그 이전의 신화적 사고와 어떻게 구별되었는지, 최초의 자연철학으로부터 기원전 5세기경 그 탐구 대상이 인간의 삶으로 확장될 때 그것의 핵심 개념으로서의 '아레테'는 무엇을 의미했는지, 그리고 현대적인 의미에서 아레테를 한 활동의 내적 목적으로 해석하는 일은 어떻게 이루어질 수 있는지를 분석적으로 탐색할 것이다. 논문의 말미에서는 교육철학이 '교육이란 무엇인가' 하는 질문에 대한 탐색이라고 할 때 이 질문은 기본적으로 어떤 성격을 지니며 그것을 탐구할 때 기본적으로 염두에 두어야 할 사항들을 결론을 대신해서 서술할 것이다.

영문 초록

This essay investigates a basic purpose of philosophy of education from the perspective of the original meanings of philosophy. When we conceive of philosophy of education as a philosophical inquiry about the human activities called education, it is quite necessary that we study its method, namely the philosophical method in terms of when it was started, where and by whom, etc. This is because 'education' is never a predetermined substance that exists prior to our inquiry but something determined by our various philosophical methods. In this essay the author regards philosophy as a discipline originated from the ancient Greek 'philosophia' and investigates what was the problem of the early natural philosophers, how it differed from the previous 'mythical thinking', how it extended into the wider human concerns that needed the philosophy not only of natural phenomenon but also of human conduct in the 5th century BC, what was the meaning of the core concept of 'arete' in the philosophy of human conduct, and how we can interpret it in a rather analytic way as the internal meaning or purpose of an activity in modern terms. At the end of the essay, the author discusses what are the basic characteristics of the question, 'What is education?', and what we should have in mind in studying this question as a question of philosophy of education.
