국문 초록

에라스무스에 대한 접근은 대체로 그의 사상을 인본주의라고 규정하면서 인문주의라는 당대의 시대적 사조를 대표하는 관점에서였다. 본 논문은 근ㆍ현대의 이념적, 사회적 변동과정을 고려한 영향사적(影響史的) 이해에서 에라스무스의 훈육이론을 다루고자 한다. 이를 통해 그의 훈육이론을 비판적으로 재해석할 수 여지가 마련되는데, 엘리아스(N. Elias)의 거대한 문명사적 안목에서 에라스무스의 훈육이론은 비(非)규범적인 방식으로 해석이 가능하다. 다른 한편으로 포스트모더니즘의 서구 근대 비판론에서 본다면, 에라스무스 훈육이론은 현대 사회의 복잡한 사회통제 기제의 중요한 역사적 원천으로 해석된다. 특히 푸코(M. Foucault)의 관점에서 에라스무스의 훈육이론은 훈육사회론을 뒷받침해주는 대표적인 역사적 선례이다. 이러한 영향사적 이해를 통하여 교육이론 및 실천에서 당연시 수용되는 훈육에 대한 비판적 이해를 가능하게 해주며, 교육의 이면에 숨겨진 부정적인 기제를 고발할 수 있다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this article is to present a new perspective on understanding the thoughts of Erasmus while focusing on his theory of discipline that came after his time. Previous studies generalized Erasmus' thoughts as humanism and focused on his humanistic characteristics that affected contemporary educational thoughts. This paper focuses on Erasmus' theory of discipline and intends to show how his thoughts can be reinterpreted based on modern and contemporary educational thoughts. A view in the aspect of effective history will allow us to critically reinterpret Erasmus' theory of discipline in relation to the large socio-historical progress and the related changes in human behavior. For instance, Norbert Elias' work on social history allows us to understand Erasmus' theory of discipline in a non-normative way that differs from the conventional humanistic interpretation. On the other hand, in the aspect of postmodernism, Erasmus' theory of discipline can be interpreted as an important historical source of the complex social control mechanisms of the modern world. This perspective allows us to critically understand discipline that is implicitly considered to be desirable in the theory and practice of education, and provides a basis to discover negative mechanisms hidden behind education.
