Foucault, Gee 그리고 Wertsch의 '디스코스(Discourse)' 개념이 교실담화분석에 주는 시사점

국문 초록

본고에서는 교실담화의 사회, 문화, 역사적 특질을 상세하게 탐구하기 위해 먼저 철학자 Foucault의 담화에 대한 개념 정의를 간략히 소개하고, 그 Foucault의 시점을 디스코스 분석에 통합한 사회언어학자 Gee의 이론을 소개하였다. Gee는 담화 활동을 개인의 정체성 형성과 밀접히 관련되어 있는 것으로 보았으며 담화 활동의 정치성에 주목하였던 사회언어학자이다. 그리고 교실담화분석의 정교화를 도모하기 위해 Gee의 디스코스 개념과 맥을 같이하는 심리학자 Wertsch의 특권화 개념을 소개하였다. 마지막으로 Foucault, Gee 그리고 Wertsch의 디스코스에 대한 논의로부터 얻은 지견(知見)에 기초하여 실제 교실담화를 어떻게 분석할 것인가를 탐구하기 위해 교실에서 일어난 담화를 제시하고 분석을 시도하였다. 이 같은 다층적인 작업에 기초하여 본고는 교실담화를 분석하는 연구자에게 줄 수 있는 다음과 같은 함의를 제시한다. '디스코스'와 '특권화'라는 개념은 첫째, 복수의 디스코스 간의 충돌과 갈등을 연구자가 자각할 수 있도록 한다. 둘째, 다양한 활동장면에서 보통은 '당연한' 혹은 '자연스러운' 것으로 간주되는 담화 형태를 연구자가 비판적으로 음미할 수 있도록 한다. 셋째, 디스코스의 '자기언급성(self-reference)'을 연구자가 자각할 수 있도록 한다. 넷째, 학교의 특수성 나아가서 학교에서 이루어지는 '말하기 방식의 특수성'을 부각시켜 준다. 마지막으로 디스코스 공동체인 학교에서 이루어지는 말하기 방식이 얼마나 일상의 말하기 방식과 다르게 독특하며 그것과 동떨어져 있는지를 가시화한다. 또한 '디스코스'와 '특권화' 개념은 더 나아가 특정한 학교에서만 통용되는 '말하기 방식'이 특정한 이데올로기와 가치관을 유지하고 재생산하고 있다는 것을 자각할 수 있도록 한다.

영문 초록

In this essay, I introduced philosopher Foucault's perspective to examine the social-cultural-historical nature of classroom discourse in detail. And I also introduced Gee's perspective in which he suggests that Discourse is closely connected with the form of individual identity, focusing on the politics of the Discourse through incorporating Foucault's perspective into discourse analysis. And I discussed Wertsch's notion of 'privileging', which is resonant with Gee's notion of 'Discourse' to elaborate classroom discourse. Finally, based upon some ideas gained from discussing Gee and Wertsch's perspectives, I introduced some actual classroom discourses and analyzed them to inquire how we should analyze classroom discourse. Through introducing and discussing the two scholars) perspectives and analyzing some actual classroom discourses, I came to gain the following implications that can be useful to the researchers of classroom discourse. First, the both concepts, such as Discourse and privileging allow the researchers to be aware of the collision and conflict among multiple Discourses. Second, the both concepts might be useful tools for examining a certain discourse pattern regarded as granted or natural because we use it unconsciously in a variety of activity settings; We tend to view a certain way of saying in a certain situation as granted or natural. Third, the both concepts might be helpful to let us realize that doing discourse analysis is a special Discourse; I'd like to call this perspective self-reference of Discourse. Although a researcher doing discourse analysis is not free from the particular Discourse and thus surely influenced by it, we tend to tacitly believe that he/she is a transcendental being. In fact, if we do discourse, we are bound to strengthen and reproduce a particular discourse, but we tend to be unaware of it. To avoid falling into a loss of self-reflection on our discourse, it is necessary to realize that discourse analysis amounts to a certain discourse, so called a self-referential activity. Fourth, the both concepts speak volume for how different or distant the way of saying in the discourse community of school is from daily lives'. And the both concepts allow us to realize that such a special way of saying, which is unique in schools, maintains and reproduces a certain ideology and value.
